Peter McCormick, host for this show, chats with Mark Fuller, CGCS, of the Connecticut Golf Club about his staff scheduling and how he avoids working his staff beyond an average of 48 hours each week... and why.

The Ladder is presented by Penn State World Campus.

Excellent topic Mac, we have seen many great guys leave this business or move into sales because of the hours required to run a first rate operation. We started last year with a 40 hour work week for our staff where everyone gets 2 days off per week, the trade off is that we work full 8 hour days on the weekends, however everyone gets either Friday, Saturday or Sunday, Monday off every week. Actually works quite well, we have part time help to fill some holes around the weekends. The staff loves the schedule, you actually feel like you have a normal job instead of disappearing from your family for the summer months, wish I would have done it years ago

Forward thinking starts at the top. If the Director isnt onbaord, the whole thing fails. Tried and tried for years to do this. Unfortunately, I left the industry because of the insane amount of hours for lack luster pay. Hope that some of you guys can embrace change and give it a whirl.
