XGD™ System (Existing Greens Drainage) is a procedure developed by TDI Golf in which a subsurface drainage system is installed to remove surface water more rapidly and lower the water table in the green, thereby improving turf growth. The procedure has gained a lot of recognition and popularity in the turf industry. The XGD™ system is an excellent method of improving the subsurface drainage of an existing green - without rebuilding the green.
The XGD™ system is a permanent solution to poorly drained and compacted greens, leading to increased aeration and the removal of excess moisture. The result is a revived green without the need for expensive and disruptive reconstruction. No other system minimizes the disruption to the green as XGD™ does, which ensures the surface is back in play as soon as possible.
In 1990 we began research on performance of soil-based greens with specific emphasis on groundwater movement. It became apparent there was a commonality with all soil greens drainage characteristics. Essentially, soil greens were constructed using the better quality topsoil found on site, which was installed into a roughed bowl cavity. The effect is much like a bathtub in that the topsoil holds a high percentage of moisture with little or no opportunity for the gravitational groundwater to escape. As a result the greens remain in saturated states at various times of the season and make it very difficult to maintain turf at a tolerance, which is much tighter than when, the course was first constructed.
We developed and trademarked our unique drainage installation process, which involves the surgical installation of drainage tubing at our specified depth and spacing, which assures the soil remains at or below field capacity for a depth of 12 inches. All tubing is installed using laser grade control and the installation typically requires 1-2 days to complete a green with the green in full use upon completion.
Our level of perfection in the installation process provides our clients with an extremely high level of comfort when hiring our XGD Systems Service. We have been very fortunate over the past decade to have worked at some classic golf clubs.
More recently, our fairway XGD installation teams have been very busy as well. The drainage characteristics of many fairway soils are unique at each club and vary from hole to hole. XGD's installation teams evaluate each fairway with the same scrutiny as our greens installation teams, because with XGD, the same crew performs the install on the green or the fairway .The same precision install is achieved in either playing surface.
We are completely confident in the XGD process, so please contact us if your club may require a consultation of your specific drainage needs.
