  • Milliken & Company is a leading manufacturer of technical fabrics and a supplier of specialty products for turfgrass management. SandMat® is one of a growing family of Milliken Turf products specifically engineered for the professional turf care and erosion control industries (see also Milliken Turf Products).

SandMat® geosynthetic bunker liner from Milliken is an engineered blend of durable, high strength polyester fibers securely bonded to form a thick blanket-like layer, specifically designed for the long term drainage and filtration of bunker sands in new and existing courses. SandMat is available in 116” wide rolls as a standard roll width although narrow width 58” rolls are also available. All SandMat products are available in white as a standard color as well as tan being available upon request.

SandMat 200 (0.5" thick) is intended for light to medium duty applications in flat or shallow sloped bunkers where drainage demands are moderate or less critical. SandMat 200 will provide protection from sand contamination due to larger stone particles. SandMat 200 usually delivers for $0.28 per square foot, depending on quantity and location.

SandMat 350 (0.8" thick) is intended for medium duty applications in flat to moderately sloped bunkers where drainage demands are moderate to high and where there is a high risk of sand contamination due to poor quality or finer sized subgrade soils. SandMat 350 features a fabric backing layer on the underside. SandMat 350 usually delivers for $0.45 per square foot, depending on quantity and location.

SandMat 400 (1.0" thick) is intended for steeper bunker areas and for bunkers where drainage demands are severed or critical. SandMat 400 should be the product of choice when drainage performance cannot be compromised. SandMat 400 usually delivers for $0.53 per square foot, depending on quantity and location.

    SANDMAT™ MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES
The main concern with bunker liners from the golf course superintendent’s perspective has usually to do with potential snagging of the liner by raking equipment. The best way to avoid snagging of the liner is to start with proper installation of the liner using the right type of soil fasteners and with the fasteners installed in sufficient quantity paying attention to details. Attention also needs to be paid to the intended ‘look’ of the bunker perimeters, e.g. exposed soil lip vs. turf lip, etc. and the intended future maintenance practices and equipment to be used in maintaining the bunker edge detail. The depth of sand cover also needs to be routinely checked to ensure that adequate sand cover above the buried bunker liner is always provided. Routine checking of sand depth is recommended regardless of whether mechanized raking equipment or hand raking is intended. We recommend that a minimum 4” (100 mm) of sand cover depth be maintained above the bunker liner.
