Registration is open for the Northeastern GCSA January Symposium.
The one-day educational event is scheduled for Jan. 7 at Shaker Ridge Country Club in Loudonville, N.Y.
Attendees can earn .65 GCSAA CEU points for completing the seminar that includes such speakers as Geunhwa Jung, Ph.D., of the University of Massachusetts, John Inguagiato, Ph.D., and John Henderson, Ph.D., both of the University of Connecticut, Adam Moeller of the USGA Green Section, David Dynowski of The Toro Co., and Mark Solan of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Registration is $65 per person, and $60 for each additional attendee from the same company.
Industry Hills (Calif.) Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort recently was named the 2010 Golf Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association.
A $60 million renovation, that included use of goats to clear some areas of growth, recently was completed at the 36-hoe brownfield course near Los Angeles.
The NGCOA also named Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, as the winner of its Jemsek Award for Golf Course Excellence. Both courses will be recognized Feb. 11 during the association’s annual conference in San Diego. The Jemsek award is named in honor of owner/operator Joe Jemsek.
Other NGCOA award winners include The First Tee, which will receive the association’s Award of Merit for contributions to the game of golf. Meriam Leek of Old Channel Trail in Montague, Mich., will receive the Don Rossi Award, which is presented to an association member who has served “with distinction.” The Champion Award, which recognizes work that improves opportunities for fellow course owners, will be presented to outgoing president Charlie Birney, Del Ratcliffe of the North Carolina chapter, and Ted Horton and the California Alliance for Golf. Juday Creek, a family owned course in Granger, Ind., will be recognized with the Player Development Award, and the late Beryl Artz a longtime ClubCorp executive, was named the winner of the Paul Porter award.
The annual Massachusetts Winter Lawn Care Conference is scheduled for Jan. 20 at the Sturbridge Host Hotel in Sturbridge, Mass.
Presented annually by the University of Massachusetts Turf Grass Extension and the Massachusetts Association of Lawn Care Professionals, the conference offers business and technical education tracks for professional turfgrass managers.
Technical track participants can choose five pesticide recertification hours, or four contact hours. Credits also have been requested for MALCP/MCLP certification, Massachusetts Nursery and Landscape Association’s MCH certification, Sports Turf Managers Association CSFM certification and the Northeast Organic Farming Association’s Accredited Organic Land Care Professional certification. Pesticide recertification hours also have been requested for business track participants.
Phoenix Environmental Care recently added Thrasher herbicide to its growing product line.
Thrasher is a low-odor, water-based herbicide with the active ingredient ethofumesate labeled for control of Poa annua in cool-season grasses and overseeded Bermudagrass on golf courses and sod farms.
Available in a 1-gallon container, Thrasher also can be used for pre-emergent and post-emergent control of a variety of other grassy weeds, including large and smooth crabgrass, barnyardgrass, green and yellow foxtail, canarygrass, burr clover, chickweed, purslane, redroot pigweed, nutsedge and white clover.
