Rounds played nationwide plummeted almost 16 percent in a rain-plagued October, according to a national industry report.
The bad news was predicted several weeks ago by many industry analysts who noted inclement weather taking its toll in several locations nationwide.
Participation was down 15.9 percent overall, including 16 percent at public-access facilities and 15.4 percent at private clubs, according to the National Golf Rounds Played Report, a collaborative effort between Golf Datatech, National Golf Foundation, PGA of America and the National Golf Course Owners Association.
Double-digit drops were recorded in many soggy areas throughout the country, with the most dramatic occurring in the upper Midwest. Minnesota led the way nationally, with a 49 percent drop in rounds played compared to October 2008. Right behind Minnesota were North and South Dakota, where rounds were down by nearly 44 percent, and Nebraska, down 42 percent. Play also was down significantly in Arkansas (down 42 percent); Iowa (38 percent); Colorado (36 percent); Missouri and Wisconsin (35 percent); Idaho, Wyoming and Montana (34 percent); and Illinois (33 percent). Other states experiencing double-digit losses were Michigan (27); West Virginia (25); Indiana (23); Kansas (22); Texas (19); Washington (16); New York and Pennsylvania (15); Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Vermont (14); Alabama; Oregon and Tennessee (13); Connecticut and Georgia (12); Utah (10).
The only states that recorded a year-over-year increase in rounds played compared with October 2008 (and those gains were minimal) were Arizona, where play was up 6 percent, Nevada (2 percent) and Florida (1 percent).
Year-to-date rounds played were down 1 percent nationally, according to the report, which sampled 3,785 courses nationwide.
