Wednesday, Aidan took me into Dublin to meet Michael Bavier (co-author of Practical Golf course Maintenance, The Magic of Greenkeeping, the third edition of which is being printed) and Joe Bedford, superintendent of Hollystown Golf Club in Dublin. Michael was in town because he and his wife happen to be on a cruise that made port in Dublin and he, Aidan and Joe have been long time friends. It was a blast talking turf and listening to them compare notes and talk about what they have been up too since their last meeting.
Me with Aidan
The real treat for me was the drive to and from Dublin with Aidan, where I was able to pick his brain about Mt. Juliet, and many other aspects of managing a golf course. He explained the tough parts of the job and what he found most enjoyable, along with his ideas about turf management. It was the first time I’d really had a chance to talk with him since we had both been so busy with work at the course, and I look forward to learning more.
