A Day on the Radio

After a great night's stay in the County Louth Golf Club, Jon and I met with course superintendent Paul Malone for a visit. The course is a links style course and is really open with steep, sharp mounds all over. This gives the course great character and makes for an interesting game of golf. Paul said that he has a staff of seven employees that maintain the course at the highest possible level. Before the winter set in the course went under a few changes; some greens were renovated, a few bunkers added and fixed, and a par three green added to change the existing hole. The old green on the par 3 17th is still in use because Paul said that the play on his course is high so the additional green can reduce the amount of wear on one hole. He has also been rerouting cart paths to make them blend into the scenery. There should be no sign of the cart paths on the way to the green.

A short drive to the town of Dundalk brought us to the radio station Dundalk FM 100 where we spent four hours as guests on two shows. The first was The Lunch Box with Padraig Quigley and Peter Carroll. On the show we were asked about our time in Ireland, what we are doing here, some background on me and how I found out about the Mt. Juliet Internship. It was an interesting experience and I had lots of fun. We even did a Moon Pie eating contest. The next show was the Afternoon Show with Joe Duffy and special guest Wayne Gilroy. Again I had so much fun being in the studio listening to the music and stories, as well as explaining the role of the internship with TurfNet, the blog, and Ireland.

Finishing off the day we met up with three local girls that Jon met in previous trips. So we grabbed a bite to eat, after seeing the Proleek Dolmen at the Ballymascanlon Hotel and Golf Club. We went to Fitzpatrick's.
