Summer's Heat

It has been a week and a half since the Irish Open so the excitement of tournament work is gone, but work goes on. Following the beautiful week at Fota Island the weather has been up and down. A few days of sunny, warm weather then a few rain soaked days. As the weather keeps getting better it is important for people to protect themselves from the sun. Wearing a hat or putting on sunscreen is a great way to reduce the amount of rays that come into contact with your skin. People who work outdoors like turf managers have a higher chance for skin problems that are associated with being under the sun all day. Take caution when preparing for the day. Your health should never be taken lightly. One day it could catch up with you.

Last week was a busy week as the Captains Prize was on Saturday. The course was in great shape for it. Everything was cut and dry spots were hand watered through out the week. To get the course in great presentation condition, fairways were cut everyday "burning in" the lines L-R and R-L. This gave the course an amazing look for the tournament.

I have been working on the putting course getting it mowed and ready for future work to be done to it. Last Monday I gave the greens some hand watering because some of them do not get water from the irrigation heads due to the throw angle. Those greens are in the worst shape and need special attention. If they do not improve I may solid tine aerate to open the soil and then saturate the holes for constant water contact with roots. When the course is mowed it looks great, but right now the greens are mowed 2X a week and surrounds/rough 1X.

Today was a hot day and as stated in the beginning about protection form the sun was needed. I wore a hat, but did not have any sunscreen. My knees are a bright red color following mowing fairways in shorts. I did not realize how hot it would get today. I guess I need to get some sunscreen for my locker. Mowing fairways today was a long job taking all day dodging golfers of all ages out there. The fairway line were tough to see especially when the dew was gone because the "burned in" lines from last week. Soon those lines will be gone. While Pat and I were on fairways the rest of the workers were on core aerating and topdressing some tees. Yesterday greens were topdressed. Aidan has an intensive topdressing program. Topdressing is a cultural practice for reducing thatch and on greens gives a smooth ball roll for putting. The putting course will be getting a light dressing soon.
