Independence Day

In honor of Independence Day back in the states, it would be a good time to look at part of how Ireland gained its independence.

Kilmainham Gaol (jail) is one of the oldest prisons in Ireland. Built by the British in 1789, it was made to hold Irish criminals and would later hold many famous patriots such as Robert Emmet, Joseph Plunkett (who married his wife Grace hours before his execution), and Eamon de Valera, who was the last prisoner and would become the first president. The Gaol was shut down in 1924. The Irish Government restored the Gaol in the 1960s and it is now a museum and tours are given daily. If you are in Dublin I highly recommend seeing this historic part of Ireland.
