Reporting to the Golf Course Superintendent, this position assists with the operation of the golf course and maintenance activities including, but not limited to: turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, financial management, member relations, scheduling/maintenance of irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related record keeping and compliance of regulatory issues. The Assistant Superintendent works to create an environment where staff are involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, members, guests and the property.
The Position The AIT position at Virginia Country Club plays a central role in raising the bar at VCC each day while maintaining a healthy work/life balance. Along with providing the necessary training and skills, this position will offer candidates the footing and mentorship to pursue a successful career managing top golf facilities in beautiful Southern California. Candidates will learn and execute proven agronomic principles responsible for top conditioning at VCC today while developing and implementing new procedures to improve the property and their skillset tomorrow. Responsibilities Learn and execute the proper application of fertilizers and chemicals to ensure health and conditioning of turf and ornamentals Develop the skills to manage moisture of all playing surfaces using instruments, hand watering, and adjustments to automated irrigation systems Assist with all cultural practices such as mowing, rolling, raking sand, cultivation, planting, and pruning Lead small groups in projects and train new employees using departmental SOP guides Assist irrigators with repairs of broken water lines, valves, or sprinklers About the Club Established in 1909 and opened on its current site in 1921, Virginia Country Club’s rich history compliments its position today as one of the most exclusive Country Clubs in Southern California. William Watson, A.W. Tillinghast, and William P. Bell were primarily responsible for conceiving the current layout of Virginia Country Club during the "Golden Age of Design" in America. With respect to its celebrated traditions, today’s club culture at VCC more reflects the Beach Cities vibe of its home, Long Beach, CA. Virginia Country Club is a home practice facility to a stable of elite players on the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, and Champions Tour along with many upcoming stars at the collegiate level. The regularity of their use of the facilities helps drive attention to performance and conditioning while also providing fun challenges for our team to up our own game in all we do at the club. The 18-hole golf course features 007/Tyee bentgrass putting greens, Bandera bermudagrass tees, Tiffway II bermudagrass fairways, and hybrid bermudagrass rough. Awarded the “Renovation of the Year” for their work by Golf Inc. Magazine, Origins Golf completed a complete renovation of the golf course in 2015. In 2021, VCC completed construction of a six hole short-course along with a new 25,000 sq ft short game practice facility. Additionally, VCC unveiled the complete renovation of its new 12-acre primary driving range featuring a 2.1-acre tee box, target greens, and a 6,000 sq ft putting green. During this same period, all cart paths were paved with a naturalized surface, a 5-acre instruction range was renovated, and a lake renovation was completed as well.
The candidate will be involved in all aspects of golf course maintenance and work closely with existing team members and management. The position is designed to help the candidate advance their career in turf. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: Perform daily mowing tasks on the golf course. Assist with rolling greens. Help with all aspects of bunker maintenance. Participate in daily course set-up and preparation. Help with all types of aerification and cultural practices. Help apply chemical/fertilizer applications and assist with equipment calibration. Help with irrigation and drainage installation, troubleshoot and repair potential problems. Learn all forms of watering on various playing surfaces. Efficiently lead groups in various tasks.
