The Country Club of Detroit is a 120 year old premier private country club in the posh upper east side of Detroit community of Grosse Pointe Farms. The club features a historic HS Colt & CH Allison design championship course (Recently restored by Renaissance Design & Tom Doak), as well as a Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed 9 hole short course. The Club has hosted (2) US Amateur Championships, recently hosted the 2018 Michigan Amateur, and will be hosting the 2020 US Senior Amateur - interns will be playing a vital role in the successful preparation & hosting of this national tournament.
Interns will be exposed to a great deal of construction/renovation work in the spring/fall of 2019. We will be working to complete in house bunker reconstruction (10 bunkers will be left in the spring), construction work with Renaissance Design where we will be adding nearly 2 acres of fairway turf for approach expansions, large scale 1 acre drainage addition/regrading project, as well as fairway/rough interface fine tuning.
The Country Club of Detroit features a $1.6 Million dollar operating budget, with a brand new maintenance facility with state of the art control & communication platforms for staff management, pump house management, as well as a brand new 6 bedroom intern house, that is shared by other club interns from Golf Operations & the Culinary Team, which allows for constant team building, as well as learning how all pieces of operational puzzle tie together. We also have a brand new equipment fleet that will be coming online in February 2019.
Interns will be exposed to hands on training in all daily maintenance facets, as well as the following:
Maintenance strategies for pure bentgrass surfaces, as well as maintenance strategies for poa annua suppression
Small crew management
Time with Equipment managers - learning both different grinding theories, as well as basic Preventative Maintenance Programs
1 week of complete autonomy of management of entire greens department staff (Total staff of 34)
Participation in monthly Greens Committee Meetings
Large scale turf conversions in golf course roughs, as well as final grow in stages of Fescue areas in deep roughs
Volunteering experience at PGA Tour Tournament
Irrigation Troubleshooting, repair, & expansions
Bunker reconstructions, with modern turf concepts, as well as Drip Irrigation installation
Learning tree management assessments
Modern water management strategies
Pump house operations
Constant 1 on 1 time with Assistants & Superintendent
Tournament Management & Operations
Interns will also have 1 on 1 time on several occasions with our Soils Consultant to learn testing principles, and how to build agronomic programs on USGA & Push Up Greens
Being ready to take on an assistant superintendent's position upon completion of internship at CC of Detroit!
Currently enrolled in/recently completed a 2 to 4 year degree, or certificate program in turf management, or related field at an accredited university.
1 or more seasons of working golf course maintenance preferred, but not required
