Merion Golf Club is currently seeking motivated students for our 2019 Internship Program who are interested in gaining valuable industry experience.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to assist with re-opening our Championship Course after a complete restoration project. The East Course will be finishing the grow-in of greens, tees, fairways and roughs before opening. Merion Golf Club takes pride in being a great place to work and in developing talent for the industry. The internship will be a rotational position between our two golf courses and include additional education opportunities.
The restored East Course has brand new playing surfaces with rebuilt greens with Precision Air, rebuilt tees and re-grassed fairways and roughs (all being new varieties of Creeping Bentgrass). Merion's West course is poa/bentgrass push up greens with internal drainage, rye grass fairways, bentgrass tees and a variety of grasses in the rough. Each intern will spend the majority of their internship on the East Course but will spend approximately three weeks experiencing the West Course as well.
We tailor each intern’s experience to their career goals, experience level and interests. Interns will attend classes with industry reps pertaining to fertilizer, chemicals and irrigation. Merion also holds “all intern” classes which include interns in each department (Greens, Food & Beverage, Golf and Administration) where they have the opportunity to meet and greet department heads and learn all about club operations.
Under the supervision of the Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents, interns perform work in all aspects of golf course maintenance. This includes chemical/fertilizer applications and calibrations, integrated pest management, irrigation repair and technology, and proper watering techniques. Based on interns’ capabilities and performance, the chance to manage the crew at the West for a week is a possibility.
Interns should be able to:
1.Follow oral and written directions
2.Learn and adapt to new job tasks
3.Be proactive in individual and group task settings
4.Learn to lead small crew projects and tasks.
5.Support a professional work environment
6.Exemplify leadership skills, physical and vocally, and lead by example
Previous golf course experience preferred. Students must be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year Turf Management (or related) program.
