DEPARTMENT:  Golf Course Grounds

 

REPORTS TO:    Assistant Superintendent, Golf Course Superintendent

 

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:  To create a club atmosphere where absolute satisfaction is our highest priority.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

            As a DCC golf course Summer Intern you will be expected to work and train with veteran staff members to further pursue your career in the turfgrass industry. You will be exposed to numerous aspects of turf and golf course management in a private 18-hole country club setting. It is critical to our internship program that all interns are self-motivated, dependable, detail oriented, enthusiastic, and exhibit a strong work ethic and willingness to learn on a daily basis. Outlined below are the duties and responsibilities of a DCC Summer Intern, which include but are not limited to:

Gain Experience in Crew Management

  • Work with the Crew Leaders, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent to ensure that daily standards and specifications are met with precise detail.
  • Lead small crews and oversee small scale projects on the golf course.
  • Assist in filling out the daily job board and run the employee morning meeting if needed.

Knowledge and Proper Use of all Golf Course Equipment

·         Small equipment operation such as green & tee mowers, buffalo blowers, etc.

·         Large equipment operation such as trucks, tractors, fairway mowers, etc.

·         Ability to demonstrate to seasonal employees the proper and safe use of all equipment.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pesticide and fertilizer calibration and application.
  • Record keeping
  • Topdressing of greens, tees, and fairways.
  • Weed and disease identification.
  • Hand watering
  • Irrigation maintenance and repair.

Additionally, a Summer Intern will be expected to:

  • Follow specific oral and written daily directions.
  • Work 40-60 hours/week, depending on the specific time of the season.
  • Work every other weekend (approximately 10 hours total for both days but must be available to come in at any given time to hand water, mow fairways, etc.)
  • Report to work on time.
  • Dress neatly and look professional on a daily basis.

 

Master Plan Renovation

            The Denver Country Club is currently undergoing renovations as part of a master plan by golf course architect Gil Hanse. The project thus far has included a redesign and regrassing of all bunkers, adding many new tee boxes to the golf course, a project to narrow the channels of the Cherry Creek that runs through the property and regrow the vegetation along the banks. In the fall of 2020 this project will continue into its final phase. The work to be completed includes moving and rebuilding 7 putting greens on the golf course, adding Better Billy Bunker liner to all golf course bunkers, moving a handful of tee boxes, as well as improving our practice facility with a new fairway and target greens.

            Any intern with the ability to work into the fall of this season will be rewarded with an abundance of practical construction, agronomic, and irrigation knowledge.
