Assistant Superintendent

The Assistant Superintendent will be responsible for organizing the direction of the maintenance crew of the golf course and the clubhouse grounds. The responsibilities include: turfgrass maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, guest relations, scheduling/maintenance of irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. Works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communication and respect for all. 



  • Directs and assists the staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement, spraying, pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs, the preparation of soil plant beds for aesthetically pleasing arrangements and tending to high stress areas.

  • Oversees repairs of broken lines or valves for water system and may perform necessary repairs in times of emergency.

  • Recruits, supervises and retains maintenance staff. Conducts employee performance evaluations and exercises disciplinary action.

  • Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA requirements.  Establishes and follows course safety guidelines and follows state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.

  • Oversees subordinates in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment, including but not limited to course maintenance equipment, golf car fleet, facility owned vehicles, and beverage carts.

  • Participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the course grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Maintains records and completes required reporting. Order parts, supplies and equipment as needed.

  • Maintaining our environmental quality and current status with Audubon International.

  • Maintains the driving range area, including staffing, turf quality, range equipment and ball dispensers.

  • Coordinates snow removal and winter maintenance activities when necessary.

  • Must be able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver.



  • Knowledge of management and maintenance of greens, fairways and roughs.

  • Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in golf course construction and maintenance work.

  • Skill in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel.

  • Knowledge of safe use, mixing and application of chemicals and commercial products.

  • Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules and methods of play.

  • Ability and knowledge to lay out irrigation patterns, drainage patterns, construct tees and/or greens.

  • Ability to obtain Alaska Applicator’s license within one year.

  • Valid Driver's License.

  • Willingness to relocate (moving expenses not included for position)

Educational Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience in a supervisory position (can be entry level position for qualified candidate)

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Certificate in Turf Management (or related field, like agronomy, horticulture, plant science, soil science).
