Overview: The 2nd Assistant Superintendent will join our team of turf professionals and will work alongside the Superintendent and Lead Assistant to provide exceptional year around conditions for members and guests. The 2nd Assistant will be exposed to all aspects of golf course management and leadership at one of California’s premier private county clubs. Claremont Country Club was established in 1897 and moved to its current location in 1903 where James “Pop” Smith laid out the original course. In the late 20’s, Alister MacKenzie and Robert Hunter renovated the course to its current routing. Over the last 15 years, using a 1930 aerial photo, the club has worked with Architect Jim Urbina to restore the MacKenzie / Hunter greens, bunkers and characteristics helping to gain entry into the MacKenzie Society of golf courses. Over the next few years, the club will continue work to restore the natural look and playability of the course using sustainable maintenance practices, organic fertilizer programs and chemical and water use reduction techniques. Position Summary: Entry level management position working with the Superintendent and Lead Assistant to maintain the golf course and grounds at the highest level. Our priorities are plant health, playability and aesthetics in that order with an emphasis and firm, fast and green surfaces. The 2nd Assistant will be included in all levels of management with the main focus being crew training, supervision, product application and irrigation management. As are the Superintendent and Lead Assistant, this is a working position where you will be expected to complete tasks while overseeing daily set up and maintenance of the course.
·Two or Four Year degree in turf related study preferred. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Candidates without formal education, but considerable golf course experience will be considered.
·The successful candidate will: be able and willing to meet the physical and mental demands of the job. Able to work a rotating weekend schedule, occasional long hours and meet the demands of the high-end club expectations. Be a career oriented individual looking to advance in the industry.
·Must possess a valid driver’s license.
·Must be able to obtain a California Pesticide License (QAC or QAL) within the first 6 months of employment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Essential functions/tasks/activities: Sitting, standing and walking for extended periods. Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of up to 75lbs. Stooping, kneeling, reaching below and above waist level
·Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
·Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
·Able to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position.
·Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping and pulling.
·Physically able and willing to use protective equipment, such as a respirator, gloves, earplugs, eye guards/visors, boots and hat.
