The Village of Glen Ellyn is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. The job duties of the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent include but are not limited to performing a variety of duties and responsibilities involved in planning, supervising, and participating in the construction, maintenance and related services for the Village golf course and parks; and to provide responsive, courteous, and efficient service to Village residents and the general public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 

Administrative:
• Serve as Golf Course Superintendent’s capacity during his/her absence
• Assist in planning and supervising maintenance of greens, tees, and fairways
• Understand and identify turf diseases and insect pests
• Assist with equipment renovation and repair, including tracking maintenance
• Demonstrate knowledge of horticultural and arboricultural techniques
• Able to operate all equipment/vehicles to maintain golf course
• Make irrigation repairs as needed
• Assist in coordinating, implementing, and documenting in-service training regarding safety and equipment operation
• Facilitate snow and ice removal
• Wear personal protection equipment (PPE) for job function when needed
• Contribute to a feedback rich environment
• Maintain good safety awareness and follow all safety guidelines and procedures
• Understand the rules and the game of golf
• Assist with maintenance of clubhouse equipment and facilities

Supervisory:
• Effectively use and supervise all available staff, materials, supplies, and equipment
• Assist in planning and scheduling of work and supervise employees and use of equipment
• Supervise pesticide application and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment
• Supervise and participate in operation and maintenance of pump stations, irrigation system, and drainage system
• Assist Superintendent in staff orientation, personnel management; may modify daily work schedule
• Hire, train, manage, lead, coach, direct, schedule, discipline, motivate, evaluate, provide feedback, and recommend merit increases for assigned staff ensuring an effective and efficient department
• Motivate staff to improve work performance and minimize staff turnover and absenteeism

Community Relations:
• Create and maintain native wildlife habitats to enhance the environmental value of the recreation department facilities, which includes conducting public outreach efforts to inform the community of environmental activities
• Assist in coordinating golf course maintenance services and activities with other Village departments, divisions, and sections and with outside agencies

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in golf course maintenance and construction including 3 years of supervisory experience
• Qualified candidates must possess a certificate, Associates, or bachelor’s degree in Turf Management or Agronomy
• An Illinois EPA Pesticide Applicator License
• Knowledge of turf maintenance and grooming
• Knowledge of landscape maintenance and construction techniques
• Knowledge of wildlife habitat creation and management. Native plant community restoration practices
• Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public
• Ability to supervise, instruct and train employees in methods and procedures
• Ability to operate golf course maintenance equipment including tractors, front loaders, skid steers, reel mowers, and power tools including mowers, edgers and blowers
• Ability to respond to complaints and grievances
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license

SALARY/BENEFITS:
The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $55,980/annually to $70,560/annually DOQ, with a full range of benefits offered. Actual starting salary is negotiable, and will be dependent upon qualifications, experience, and professional achievement.
