Founded in 1854 Philadelphia Cricket Club is America’s oldest country club.In the 1920’s it was the home course of golf architects A.W. Tillinghast and George C. Thomas Jr. and includes 3 courses built in 3 different centuries.The Club’s two campuses include 45 holes of golf, 22 grass tennis courts, 10 clay tennis courts, and an athletic field.Our St. Martins course, built in the 1800’s and site of the 1907 & 1910 US Open went through a restoration program in 2012.In 2013, our A.W. Tillinghast designed Wissahickon golf course was restored with golf course architect, Keith Foster.It received U.S. Best Restoration of 2013 by GolfWeek and Cybergolf. Wissahickon is currently ranked as #30 in Golfweek’s best classic courses and fourth in Pennsylvania. We hosted the 2016 Champions Tour’s Constellation Senior Players Championship which was televised by the Golf Channel and met with rave reviews from the TOUR players.Our 2002 Hurdzan/Fry designed, Militia Hill course is maintained to equally high standards.We will be hosting this year's Pennsylvania Open and the USGA Four-Ball Championship in 2024. The club recently passed a Long Range Plan that includes work at the St Martins Campus that you will get to help execute.
You will be responsible for staff supervision and hiring, course conditions, fertilizer and chemical applications, irrigation scheduling, and working with the Director of Grounds to help execute the long range plan. You will also work with the Grounds Maintenance Manager to plan pesticide applications and early order purchasing as well as budgeting for St Martins campus.
As the Athletic Superintendent, you will oversee the Great Lawn, Har-Tru Courts, the athletic field, and the pool area.You will also help the Golf Course Superintendent with the nine hole golf course.The Great Lawn is 4 Acres of Bent Grass and Poa used for grass tennis, Lawn Bowls, Croquet, and Cricket.You will have the unique opportunity to work on a golf course with push up Bent/Poa greens and Zoysia tees and fairways.The combination of warm season fairways with push up greens (some from the 1800’s) is a truly unique experience.
The opportunity to maintain The Great Lawn as it is used for tennis and various other sports is a chance to provide championship conditions to a wide variety of members who use The Great Lawn for varying sports or events.You will be tasked with helping develop a chemical and fertilizer plan and irrigation schedule in maintaining exceptional playing conditions.
You will also have autonomous mowers used to mow the athletic field and pool lawn area.With the help of the mechanic you will be responsible to make sure they are operating properly and maintaining those areas of turf.
A degree or certificate in Turf Management or similar field.
The ideal candidate should have 2 - 4 years of previous golf course or sports turf experience.
Candidate should have a positive attitude and be responsible by nature while exuding a friendly demeanor with a willingness to exceed member expectations.
Should have experience running a crew, overseeing projects on the golf course, and be flexible within the role of superintendent. Should be a team player with in the grounds staff as well as be a team player with other department heads as we all strive to put forth excellent conditions.
Must be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills both verbally and written. Will need to have a friendly and professional relationship with the staff, other departments, and members as they carry out the daily tasks of the job.
The ideal candidate should have some experience with scheduling, maintaining, and repairing irrigation system, spraying, leading a crew, and project management.
We will work with the chosen candidate to develop a compensation and bonus package that will help provide a work / life balance, security in the position, and growth at the Athletic Superintendent works alongside the Golf Course Superintendent. Short-term housing is available while acclimating to the area and finding housing. Health and dental insurance after a 90-day probationary period, 401K with 4% match and vacation after 6 months of service. Uniforms provided, GCSAA and local dues paid, additional PTO in offseason, and golf and tennis privileges.
