Lake Barkley State Resort Park is in Western Kentucky near Cadiz Kentucky. This Larry Packard designed 18-hole golf course (Boots Randolph Golf Course) has USGA greens converted in summer of 2020 to Tifeagle Ultradwarf bermudagrass. Tees, fairways and primary rough are Tifway II bermudagrass and secondary rough is warm and cool season grasses. Another exciting project happening is the complete restoration/mitigation of Blue Spring Creek, a beautiful spring fed creek that drains the entire area through the golf course into Lake Barkley. Not only will this creek be an environmental masterpiece, but it will also enhance several the golf holes. This project is being led by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. While the work will be entirely contracted out, the Superintendent and golf staff will gain unique experience throughout the process. Assists Golf Course Superintendent in all phases of golf maintenance and agronomic operations, cost control, and personnel. Leads staff and performs duties in the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, and wetlands on the facility grounds under the guidance of the Golf Course Superintendent. Leads staff in projects and routine maintenance activities. Calibrates and operates the equipment necessary to apply chemicals and fertilizers. Applies irrigation water in accordance with procedures. Diagnoses irrigation repair needs and performs repairs. Directs, trains, and assists a group of maintenance personnel in the performance of routine care and maintenance work for a golf course. Inspects machinery and equipment to determine their operating condition and repair needs. Purchases supplies for the park and golf course. Performs public relations functions in the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent. Prepares operating records and makes reports of park and golf activities. Prepares reports, summaries, and recommendations pertaining to golf course development. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Must obtain Kentucky Pesticide Applicator License within six months of employment. The N-18 Pesticide Applicators License required by this position can be obtained by passing the test administered by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Some travel required for turf and department meetings and conferences. Overtime and weekends required periodically. Work is typically performed outdoors.
Education Requirement – High School Graduate – An Associate’s degree in plant sciences or a Certificate of Turfgrass Management from an accredited university can substitute for ONE of the required two years working experience.
Experience – Two years experience working on a golf maintenance staff for a regulation golf course.
