Spray/Applications Technician

North Ranch Country Club, a private member-owned club in Southern California, is looking to add a Spray Technician to its Golf Course Maintenance team.

Job Summary:

The Golf Course Spray Technician plays a vital role in maintaining the health, aesthetics, and quality of the golf course and its turfgrass. Under the guidance of the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, the Golf Course Spray Technician will perform chemical applications, fertilize tees, greens, and fairways, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. This position requires a keen understanding of chemical labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), along with the ability to compile preliminary pesticide usage reports. This is the perfect position for someone looking to gain knowledge and experience in the turfgrass industry and grow at one of the top private country clubs in Southern California.

Job Tasks/Duties:

  • Accurately applies fertilizers and chemicals to greens, tees, aprons, fairways, and approaches.
  • Conducts routine safety inspections of all spraying equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Maintains chemical storage and mixing areas, ensuring compliance with county, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitors and tracks chemical inventory to maintain sufficient stock levels.
  • Cleans, tests, calibrates, and prepares all spray application equipment.
  • Performs basic preventive maintenance as directed, reporting any equipment issues to the Superintendent
  • May operate reel or rotary mowers in the absence of the Equipment Operator and assist in the preparation of the golf course. 
  • Compiles and submits preliminary reports on pesticide usage to the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
  • Mows greens, trees, aprons, and approaches to greens and other areas not accessible with gang mowers; rakes sand traps with power rakes.
  • Maintains gasoline, oil, and other equipment fluid levels daily, and reports equipment problems and failures to the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent immediately.
  • Performs basic preventive maintenance on equipment as directed by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent and returns equipment to its designated location at the maintenance facility.
  • Utilizes loaders to remove dirt, debris, and other materials.
  • May be asked to change pins and tee markers.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.

Job Knowledge, Core Competencies, and Expectations:

  • Mechanically pressurized spray equipment
  • Hand-operated spray equipment
  • Hand-operated rotary and drop spreaders
  • Utility tractors
  • Large, tow-behind rotary spreaders
  • Trucks and light motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science, and the rules of golf.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform required role in emergency situations.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Must be able to push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling.
  • On occasion must be able to do heavy lifting and physical activity for up to 12 hours.
  • Must be able to work from the ground at times.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods.
  • Must be able to perform tasks in multiple types of conditions hot, cold, noisy, dusty, and rainy as needed.

Educational Requirements

  • College graduate with a degree in Agronomy or holding a certificate in turfgrass or another related field.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Completion of state and federal training requirements, including those mandated by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.

Experience Requirements

  • Experience working on a golf course is preferred, but not required. Must be detail-oriented, have a strong work ethic, and a desire to provide championship conditions for the membership daily.
  • Knowledge of chemical application and calibration.
