Position Overview

Black Bear Golf Club in Eustis Florida is seeking a knowledgeable, passionate and hands-on Grounds Superintendent to oversee turf-grass management, irrigation systems, landscaping, budgeting, and leading a grounds crew to deliver a first-class experience for our members and guests for our eighteen-hole public golf course.

Black Bear is a family owned and operated 18 hole public golf course.

This is a full-time, year-round position.

Educational Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • 3+ years of golf course maintenance experience; supervisory experience preferred.

·         Associate’s degree in Turf Management or similar is preferred.

·         A bachelor's degree in agronomy, horticulture, or a related field is preferred.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; degree or certification in Turf Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred.
  • GCSAA Member preferred but not required

Knowledge of local, federal, and state laws and regulations affecting management of golf course operations.

Experience Requirements

Key responsibilities

  • Plan, supervise, and participate in the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, practice areas, and surrounding grounds.  Must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Turf & Grounds Management: Plan and implement agronomic programs, including fertilization, pest control, aeration, mowing, irrigation, and overseeding.
  • Staff Leadership: Recruit, train, and supervise grounds crew staff; manage schedules and performance.
  • Irrigation Systems: Oversee installation, maintenance, and operation of irrigation systems to ensure efficient water management.
  • Spray Tech Certification required
  • Equipment Maintenance: Coordinate with mechanic on the care and maintenance of golf course equipment and machinery and servicing and safe operation.
  • Course Conditions: Ensure course is prepared daily for play, with attention to tees, greens, bunkers, fairways, and rough.
  • Budgeting & Planning: Develop and manage annual operating budget for grounds; track expenses and control costs.
  • Compliance & Safety: Maintain records and compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to turf care, chemicals, and workplace safety.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with club management, golf professionals, and ownership to align course conditions with member/guest expectations.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to obtain state pesticide applicator license.
  • Willingness to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Must be highly organized and efficient with a high attention to detail
  • Must have basic computer skills

Special Requirements

·         Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential.  Need to be able to prioritize tasks and delegate responsibility to subordinate staff.  Need to develop and manage relationships with vendors and suppliers.  Need the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.  BBGC is located in Central Florida.  Superintendents in Central Florida must be prepared to deal with extreme heat and heavy downpours at times.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform hands-on physical labor.
  • Extended periods of walking, bending, kneeling, and operating machinery.

  • Salary is based on experience with a range of $55,000 - $65,000.
  • Benefits may include: golf privileges, and continuing education opportunities.
