MAJOR PURPOSE: The Assistant Manager, Grounds for Jackie Robinson Training Complex directs and participates in the maintenance of sports fields, practice areas and other common areas and performs related work as required. The Assistant Manager, Grounds assists with the day-to-day management of the Grounds Crew personnel and serves in the Manager, Grounds’ capacity during absences. RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists in planning, supervising and executing the maintenance of athletic fields (natural grass and synthetic surfaces) and common areas with regards to safety, playability and aesthetics. Performs and supervises staff in tasks including but not limited to mowing, edging, infield clay work, mound/home plate repair, tarp pulls, batting practice set-up and break-down, and pre/post game preparation and repair. Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment and/or operates mowing and other equipment; supervises chemical applications and/or operates and calibrates chemical application equipment; supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems. Schedules and supervises maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of crew and equipment; to prepare clear and concise reports; and to maintain effective employee and employer communication. Assists in Grounds Crew personnel management as assigned by the Manager, Grounds, including but not limited to recruiting, hiring, training, day-to-day scheduling and management, time review, assisting in disciplinary processes, regularly directing employee’s work, and evaluation. Fulfills the responsibilities of the Manager, Grounds in the absence of the Manager, Grounds. Helps ensure proper safety procedures including OSHA requirements are followed by all Grounds Crew personnel. Assists with maintenance of all batting cages and the Grounds Crew shop and storage buildings. REQUIREMENTS: The preferred candidate will have a two or four year degree in turfgrass related studies, or equivalent experience and education. Working knowledge of the maintenance of sports fields, landscape and common areas. Prior professional baseball field management experience preferred. High level of understanding of the sports requirements for field layouts and markings. Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Candidate must be a professional, self-starter who will work as a team player and also be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to manage one’s own time and the time of others. Supervisory experience, at least three years preferred. Able to work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Possession of a valid Driver's License and excellent driving record. Must have a current Florida Commercial Pesticide and Fertilizer Applications License or have the ability to obtain it within 6 months of hire. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Awesome story! I did a similar thing during my beginnings in the Golf Maintenance Business with gasoline on a brush pile in a dry creek bottom. If a little gas is good, a lot must be better and if you wait to let the gas soak in (and the fumes spread out along the ground) before you light it, it will knock you down and require a couple of months for all of your hair to grow back...
