    Grounds Staff

    The Facility Services Department at Messiah College has an immediate opening for the full-time, year-round position of Groundskeeper / Sports Turf Leader. Responsibilities: This position is responsible for the maintenance and preparation of all sports fields, courts, and tracks including placement of equipment to support athletic, college or off-campus related events. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; some turf management education preferred; pesticide applicators license/commercial pesticide certification; valid PA Driver's License. 2 years of sports turf/grounds keeping/commercial gardening experience. Strongly prefer sports turf manager certification from an accredited university or professional association. Skills and Characteristics: Robust knowledge of sports turf management and sports turf preparation as well as maintenance; knowledge of Toro Sentinel irrigation systems small repairs and set-up; basic knowledge of fences, construction, concrete/macadam work, and storm drain installation; ability to operate standard grounds equipment: tractor, mower, front mount mower, gator, weed whip, chain saw, leaf blower; ability to work with limited supervision and be a self-motivated team player able to motivate, supervise and encourage a small team; excellent time management skills, strong organizational skills; ability to prioritize projects; and basic computer skills including the use of e-mail system and software programs used to perform job.   2. The Grounds Services Department at Messiah College has an immediate opening for the full-time position of Grounds Services Manager. Responsibilities: The Grounds Service Manager performs oversight of all Messiah College grounds operations including the planning and upkeep of landscape, snow and ice removal, management of contract projects, and the supervision of grounds work by staff and contractors. Qualifications: 5 years of grounds-related supervisory experience is required as well as vocational training in an applicable area; ability to obtain pesticide certification in categories 23, or 6 and 7 within 6 months of employment. Bachelor's degree in Grounds/Horticulture or equivalent years of experience in managing a grounds maintenance operation. Skills and Characteristics: Excellent customer service skills; ability to interact effectively with employees, students and visitors; ability to demonstrate respect for others, build trust and rapport across teams, and act as a role-model to employees and students; ability to operate all vehicles owned by the college; ability to operate all machinery necessary to perform job functions; Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator's License required. About: The Grounds Services department is responsible for the care of 475 acres of land. This land is made up of developed and undeveloped land, landscaped areas around buildings, green space, athletic fields, outlying fields and satellite properties. The department utilizes a zonal maintenance system by assigning specific zones to crew leaders.
