    Assistant Superintendent

    Job Objective: The Assistant Superintendent helps manage the golf course day-to-day maintenance operations. He/She assists the Golf Course Superintendent in maintaining quality standards, developing and retaining maintenance employees and exceeding member/guest expectations. They will contribute in the planning and execution of all activities related to the care and maintenance of the golf course and landscaped areas. The Assistant Superintendent reports to the Superintendent and will serve in the Superintendents capacity during his/her absence. Primary Responsibilities: · Schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve efficient utilization of workers and equipment. · Training of new maintenance personnel. · Identify and trouble shoot agronomic problems that occur on the golf course. · Implement and evaluate fertilizer/pesticide programs. · Possess the ability to calibrate and operate spray equipment. · Assist in controlling turnover, motivating employees, focusing on employee development and retention and participating in regular employee meetings. · Follow company policies and procedures and be able to effectively communicate them to subordinates. · Possess California Qualified Applicators Certificate within 6 months of hire. · Able to work long hours including weekends and holidays. Note: Other duties as assigned by Superintendent or management. Qualifications: Education/Experience: Two/Four-year degree in Turfgrass or related field. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Golf course experience with progressive responsibility required. Must be able to acquire and maintain a California Qualified Applicators Certificate within the first six months of hire. Must have working knowledge of turf grass maintenance equipment and irrigation systems. Ability to speak Spanish a plus. Skills: Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead by example Attention to detail Water management Strong oral and written communication skills Ability to multi-task Working Conditions: This candidate will be required to work in inclement weather and potentially other adverse working conditions. They will be required to work weekends and holidays. Physical/Cognitive Activities: This description of physical and mental activities is not intended to describe essential job functions. The major responsibility in this position is to oversee the day-to-day activities of the golf course grounds crew. A significant amount of time will be spent moving about the property working with the maintenance crew. Strong leadership and problem-solving skills will be used. Effective and professional communication is extremely important. A portion of time will be spent organizing maintenance activities and assisting the Superintendent in scheduling and implementing effective agronomic strategies. Heavy lifting of more than 50 pounds will be required from time to time.
