The Lead Assistant Superintendent will direct and participate in the maintenance of the golf course areas, including but not limited to, tees, greens, fairways, roughs, bunkers, aquatics and native areas. This role requires strong leadership skills used to motivate and manage team members in excess of thirty. A keen sense of agronomics in the Transition Zone is required including the ability to support fertility and chemical programming used to maintain turf at a high level. The Lead Assistant Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent and will serve in the superintendent's capacity during his absence. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan and supervise the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; schedules work; and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment. Instruct equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment; and supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems. Assist in staff management and evaluation, employee safety and employee counseling. Train, motivate and supervise staff capable of performing the tasks associated with maintaining the golf course. Modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation as needed. Perform aquatic applications on property including planning. Conduct daily staff morning meetings, monthly staff meetings and communicate the daily and weekly objectives of the golf course maintenance department. Responsible for generating mowing and agronomic schedules to ensure they meet the standards of Valhalla Golf Club. Monitor staff’s hours and obtains daily labor reports from the administrative assistant for the purpose of managing labor budgets and proper use of time clock. Assist the GCS with record keeping for supplies, daily logs, application records, climatic condition records and any personnel records. Daily scheduling, training, follow up of staff to accomplish duties as laid out by the Golf Course Superintendent. Build relationships and communicate with golf shop staff daily. Inform golf shop on maintenance procedures, (topdressing, cart paths only, etc.). Discuss daily schedules, programs and concerns with the Golf Course Superintendent with attention to efficient management and quality control in mind. Assure that all issues and concerns are brought to the Golf Course Superintendent as quickly as possible in order to lessen potential negative impact. Assist the GCS with development and implementation of necessary agronomic and cultural programs. Document and file daily records for each team member’s assignments. This should be done daily with job task and completion time. Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with weekly key labor meetings with key departmental staff to discuss past week and following week issues, successes and programs. Work with the mechanic daily on equipment use and requirements. Assure that all equipment is properly set up and operating as needed in the field. Tour the golf course on a regular basis with attention to greens, tees, fairways and rough conditions as a minimum. Note all areas where issues are seen and plan for the next day events. Ensure organization of the GCM facility, equipment and grounds. Assist the GCS with preparation, development and management of the operating budget. Assure that environmental, compliance and maintenance facility are monitored and maintained. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: All employees within the GCM department with the exception of the Golf Course Superintendent. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employee; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
