Grounds Staff
Full-time
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision, performs a variety of grounds maintenance duties including but not limited to the following:
- Mowing, weedeating, edging beds and sidewalks
- Weed control in beds, parking lots, walkways, etc. using herbicides or mechanical means
- Planting, establishing, edging, mulching & maintenance of landscape beds
- Pruning trees & shrubs
- Trail maintenance - clearing downed trees and noting other hazardous conditions
- Maintain campus ponds, dams, and outdoor recreation areas
- Assist with maintenance of ball fields and tennis courts
- Assist with farm operations and maintenance of herb garden
- Maintenance of outdoor structures - sheds, shelters, storage barns, sitting areas, etc.
- Keep gutters and downspouts clear
- Maintain & repair irrigation & drainage
- Aerate, overseed, & fertilize high traffic turf areas
- Maintenance of roads, right of ways, and parking areas
- Pick up litter, debris, downed limbs, and maintain general cleanliness of campus
- Pressure wash building exteriors, signs, walkways, monuments, etc.
- Light carpentry & painting work - fence repair, wood preservation, etc.
- Light masonry work - sidewalk & stone wall repair
- Assist with custodial work as needed or during special events
- Assist with motor pool & grounds equipment maintenance
- Assist with event set-up & break down, moving, loading, unloading and storing supplies, furniture and equipment
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
- Some training or experience in horticulture or landscaping required
- Knowledgeable in the safe operation and maintenance of grounds equipment
- Able to recognize problems and triage, report and coordinate proper repairs
- Display a pro-active initiative and collaborative work style
- Able to use the mobile work order system to receive requests and track work progress on tablet or mobile device
- Adjustment of hours and/or weekend work may be required and/or occasional overtime
- Ability to perform work independently with minimal supervision
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear.
- Frequently must squat, stoop, or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.
- Use hand strength to grasp tools, supplies and equipment.
- Occasionally climb ladders, use aerial lifts, or enter crawl spaces.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Occasionally works with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. Frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock, mechanical hazards, burn hazards, chemical hazards.
- Moderate noise level.
- Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat.
- Use PPE as required
Educational Requirements
Horticulture/turf/landscape training desirable but not required
Experience Requirements
Experience in turf/horticulture/landscaping required
