Irrigation Technician

Collegiate School seeks an experienced Groundskeeper/Irrigation Technician to work on our Facilities team. The Groundskeeper/Irrigation Technician will be primarily responsible for completing the daily tasks related to maintenance, monitoring and repair of the irrigation system. This position will assist with tasks related to maintaining and improving the campus grounds and will adhere to all personnel policies, procedures and rules contained in the Faculty/Staff Handbook. This position is designated as Essential Personnel during emergency situations (i.e. snow removal). This is a full-time position.

General Responsibilities include:

  • Plant, prune, trim, spray, mow, weed, fertilize, sweep, blow, trash removal, rake, cultivate, dig, water, shovel or plow snow, remove ice, spread salt and/or sand and other related duties.
  • Operate and maintain various types of equipment, including power mowers, blowers, saws, edger and shears.
  • Operate tractors and attachments to maintain grounds as needed.
  • Yearly irrigation system start-up and shutdown.
  • Provide monthly visual checks of every zone on the irrigation system to provide maximum efficiency.
  • Adjust and repair irrigation heads, repair irrigation leaks and raise low irrigation heads.
  • Irrigation pond and pump monitoring, troubleshoot irrigation issues, help in monitoring moisture levels and programing of irrigation systems, etc.
  • Ability to operate a computerized irrigation system.
  • Maintain equipment for cleanliness and report all repairs needed.
  • Remain up-to-date and informed as to current practices of job-related functions.
  • Comply with OSHA safety rules and regulations, and use appropriate P.P.E.
  • Be available to work special events, activities and certain weekend days, as needed. 
  • Perform other necessary Physical Plant duties, as assigned.

Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications and competencies:

  • 3 years of experience as a groundskeeper/irrigation technician in a commercial environment.
  • Excellent reading, writing and oral comprehension skills required (including proper English, punctuation, grammar rules, etc.)  Specifically, ability to read manuals and follow safety instructions.
  • Excellent verbal communication and listening skills, with attention to clarity and detail.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • High School Diploma.
  • Must have valid Virginia driver's license.
