Assistant Superintendent

Columbine Country Club located in Denver, Colorado is seeking a highly engaged professional to help lead the agronomic department as its next Senior Assistant. The club is a $20 million gross revenue, full service, neighborhood club that is surrounded by one of the most desirable neighborhoods in all of metro Denver.

The selected candidate will work closely with the Director of Agronomy to continue to
make Columbine Country Club the premier family club in Denver.

About Columbine Country Club:

The club was built in 1955, and is a Henry Hughes design skirting the South Platte river. Columbine hosted the 1967 PGA Championship along with numerous USGA events and LPGA events over the years. Columbine, like most clubs, has had multiple architects over the years, most recently Rees Jones completed a bunker renovation in 2019. Along with the bunker renovation, Mr. Jones restored the original layout by returning the 6th green to its original home and rebuilding the 10th green for today’s green speeds.

Head Golf Pro Bryan Hiem (PGA) along with Director of Agronomy Hugh Lynch, combined have almost 30 years running the golf operation at CCC, making it a strong, healthy working environment for the incoming candidate who will work closely with golf staff to ensure our members have highest member experience possible.

Club highlights:

  • Total membership - 716 with over 150 members carrying a single digit handicap
  • Initiation fee - $105,000 and $40,000 for social category
  • 5-year waiting list for all available categories of membership
  • Number of rounds: 36,000 on main course and 6,000 on short course
  • Staff size - 10 full time, 12 seasonal, and 10 H2B employees
  • Future projects include renovations to the west campus, pool complex, and short course
  • Irrigation system - Wall to wall Toro System with HDPE pipe
  • Equipment - Toro equipment and is owned not leased
  • Recently, built a $25M clubhouse in 2017

Initial Priorities of Position:

  • Be a team player - learn and build relationships with staff.
  • Observe and learn the daily preparations, routines and details required to maintain high golf course conditioning standards.
  • Assimilate into an already established team and manage day to day operations of the golf course maintenance crew

Key knowledge, skills, aptitude and other traits:

  • Knowledge of proper use of fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and soil conditioners.
  • Monitor turfgrass health and identify and address any issues or diseases.
  • Responsible for providing recommendations to challenges and improving conditions on all maintained turfgrass
  • Manage the scheduling and supervision of staff, including assigning tasks and evaluating performance.
  • Communicate and transfer knowledge both verbally and written to the Director of Agronomy and the rest of the supporting staff
  • Responsible for supervising the detailed maintenance of the property, staff and equipment
  • Participating in interviewing, hiring, directing, and supervising the Golf Course and Grounds team
  • Participate in professional development activities to stay current with industry trends and best practices

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary - $100,000 - $105,000

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 or 4-year degree in turfgrass-related field
  • Three to five years plus experience in agronomic practices, golf course maintenance, and progressive leadership responsibilities.
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain a CO state pesticide applicators license
