Seasonal Intern

Internship

Contentment is presenting a unique opportunity for college-level interns to experience all facets of golf course construction, grow-in, and establishment. Contentment is a very special project taking place on 900 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in rural Traphill, North Carolina. Following the course design by Lester George, Contentment will feature a number of design elements representative of the Golden Age of golf architecture, using the work of Seth Raynor and C.B. Macdonald as inspiration. Contentment will be a national golf retreat that provides its members an opportunity to escape the hectic world, and relax in a luxurious setting. As the official groundbreaking only recently took place in October of 2023, this project is very much in its infancy and not scheduled to open until fall of 2025. Successful applicants will very literally be able to be involved “from the ground up”. To the benefit of all that will be involved, the learning experience will be unparalleled. Working closely with the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, the internship will be fast-paced and versatile. There will be endless opportunities to be involved in the following:

  • USGA-specification putting green construction
  • Bunker construction, including Better Billy Bunker liner installation
  • Maintenance facility planning and construction
  • State-of-the-art HDPE, Toro 2-wire irrigation layout, installation, programming, troubleshooting and operation
  • Navigating construction in environmentally sensitive areas
  • Subsurface drainage installation
  • Opportunities to interact, collaborate, and network with project superintendents, construction staff, golf course architect, contractors and vendors
  • Pre-plant preparation and seeding/sodding of bentgrass greens, tees, and fairways; fescue/bluegrass roughs; and fescue native areas
  • All grow-in techniques including fertility, water management, mowing, topdressing, and integrated pest management
  • Chemical and fertilizer calibration and application
  • Staff and equipment scheduling
  • Development of leadership and communication skills
  • Networking, resume building and interview experience

While the goal of the internship will be to provide interns with real-world educational experience and a lasting skillset to assist in any post-graduation pursuits, future opportunities within the Contentment team will certainly be available.
