Assistant Superintendent

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent; programs, operates and maintains the golf course irrigation systems, supervise work crews, as assigned, and assist in application of chemicals and/or fertilizer.  Safety is foremost in the operations and maintenance of the systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates irrigation field controllers, pipes, valves, irrigation sprinkler heads of the greens, tees and fairways.
  • Operates a light/heavy vehicle which can include an automobile, tractor, riding mower, push or pull mowers and truck.
  • Will be required to work on the electrical wiring as related to the irrigation systems.
  • Must accurately read various gauges related to the irrigation system.
  • Detect and make necessary repairs to the irrigation system.
  • Grades and prepares soil base, lays sod and seeds greens, tees and fairways.
  • Repairs greens with seeds or plugs of new grass when needed, and operates dump truck and other light equipment in hauling materials and removing debris.
  • Assist with managing the work crews.
  • Assist with inventory and purchasing maintenance supplies.

Other Duties Include: performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Working knowledge of basic electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system, including automatic valves and controllers, and working knowledge of various types of pumps and pumping systems.
  • Knowledge of the proper care of tools and equipment used in the maintenance of irrigation systems, greens, tees, fairways, hazards, bunkers, and general grounds of the golf course.
  • Knowledge of turf disease, insects, rodents, chemicals and methods used to control these elements.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of the game of golf and understand how job performance affects the playing conditions of the golf course.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
  • Schedule can include early mornings, nights, weekends, split shifts, and holidays.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license
  • Must successfully pass a required pre-employment drug screen and background check.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from high school and two to four years turf care management degree or equivalent related field of experience in landscape turf management.
  • One to two years past experience in a supervisory capacity preferred. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Proficient in English. Other languages helpful.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Basic Math skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the management of work crews.
  • Manages the work crews in the absence of the Superintendent.

  • Ability to work flexible hours with some weekend and holiday work required.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, twist, reach, bend, grasp, kneel and perform a variety of similar body movements; ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work including digging, to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone and two-way radio; ability to see and read to make repairs, read reports/labels and conditions of irrigation system.
  • Ability to hear in person and by telephone and two-way radio to operate equipment safely and to make repairs.
