Assistant Superintendent

The Assistant Superintendent works with the Golf Course Superintendent and reports directly to the Director of Agronomy.  Should the candidate reach their individual goals, this position provides the opportunity for future promotion to Superintendent within the Club.  This position provides a unique opportunity to learn how to maintain Santa Ana hybrid bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens in a Northern California climate.  The successful candidate will be a positive leader, motivator, and will act as a mentor to our team.  The ability to communicate in Spanish is preferred.       

Menlo Country Club is a member-owned, full-service country club governed by a seven-member Board of Directors and operates under the General Manager and Chief Operating Officer concept. Club amenities include a new clubhouse overlooking the golf course, four tennis courts, a swimming pool and overnight accommodations.  The Club recently completed construction on a new, state-of-the-art clubhouse and fitness facility and converted all tees and fairways from perennial ryegrass to Santa Ana hybrid bermuda. The Club’s 18 holes of golf feature a new design by Kyle Phillips opened in July 2014 and host approximately 24,000 rounds annually.  The parkland style golf course features bentgrass greens and Santa Ana tees, fairways, and approaches. Fescue and native areas are featured in the rough.

Educational Requirements

Educational Requirements:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school is required
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a four-year college or technical school is preferred
  • Suitable courses of study: Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture or related field

Experience Requirements

Successful Candidates Will Possess:

  • A minimum of 2 years of golf maintenance experience
  • Desire to become a Golf Course Superintendent
  •  Strong leadership, team-building, and interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter who leads by example
  • Irrigation experience, including troubleshooting, repairs, programming, watering
  • Experience calibrating, and applying, and monitoring chemical and fertilizer applications
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to operate general golf course maintenance equipment

Special Requirements:

  • Spanish speaking preferred
  • Experience with Toro Lynx irrigation operating system preferred
  • Must be able to attain California QAL/QAC within 90-days of employment
