Internship

Sleepy Hollow Country Club is a private, 27-hole C.B MacDonald original design overlooking the Hudson River in Scarborough, New York.  SHCC is currently ranked 59th in the United States by Golf Digest, and 70th in the world by Golf Magazine.  The 338 acre property consists of a championship 18-hole Upper Course and an executive 9-hole Lower Course.  Hanse Golf Course Design completed a restoration of the Upper Course in 2016 that converted the greens construction to USGA specification while utilizing the original poa sod.  The Lower Course consists of native soil push-up greens, offering candidates an opportunity to manage both sand-constructed USGA greens and hundred year old native soil greens on the same property.

Seasonal interns will be an integral part of an agronomic team that strives to provide championship level conditioning on a daily basis to our membership and guests.  Interns are involved in every aspect of the day-to-day operations, and will work alongside all assistants and the superintendent.

Summer learning opportunities will include:

  • Daily course setup, including special event/tournament setup strategy
  • Advanced moisture management on all playing surfaces
  • Plant protectant and fertilizer applications using wide array of equipment
    • Spray hawks, boom sprayers, and GPS boom sprayers
  • Irrigation system operation, repair, and maintenance practices
    • Both new Toro 2-wire SmartHub system and Toro VP Satellite system
  • In-season cultural practices, including spiking, needletining, topdressing, groom/brushing
  • Involvement in disease/insect scouting, and IPM record-keeping
  • Long and short term budgeting strategies
  • Introduction to data collecting and digital tools
    • Application record keeping using Playbooks, job scheduling using TaskTracker, speed and firmness data using the USGA GS3 ball and Deacon software
  • Exposure to golf course construction projects and facility improvements
  • Volunteer and networking opportunities at other top clubs in the Metropolitan area

Engaged interns will open more doors as they progress, and it is our hope that interns will seize the opportunity to convert their internship into a full time position.  Two of our current assistant superintendents came through the internship program, and we have placed six interns as assistant superintendents across the country in the last three years.  This is a great opportunity for both first year interns and post-graduates alike looking for a fast-paced environment to elevate and hone their skills as they work towards achieving their career goals.  The agronomy team is very well connected in the industry, and will do everything we can to help interns be as successful as possible in their future careers.
