Stanley Golf Course is a 27-hole municipal golf course established in 1930, centrally located in the state of CT in New Britain, CT. SGC is seeking a highly motivated and knowledgeable candidate with a background in fertilizer and pesticide applications as well as someone with experience back-lapping, spin/relief grinding, and rebuilding reel units. This person should also be knowledgeable of golf course maintenance and procedures, course setup, hand watering and irrigation repair.

Along with 27-holes, the course offers a large practice putting green, chipping green with a practice bunker and a covered, heated, and illuminated 19-bay driving range facility, Powered by Top Tracer Technology.  Within the clubhouse, there is a full service golf shop as well as a restaurant that is home on the Back 9 Tavern. The course just wrapped up the construction of a new event pavilion. There are six (6) acres of putting surfaces (bent/poa), six (6) acres of teeing space (bent/poa/blue) and thirty-five (35) acres of fairways (bent/poa/blue) that are spread out on the parkland, one hundred seventy-five (175) acre property. The irrigation system was installed in 2015 with all HDPE and is a 2-wire Toro setup (Infinity irrigation heads), all controlled by the Toro Lynx central. Our grinding equipment consists of a SIP 7000 (Simplex Ideal Peerless) spin/relief grinder and a SIP 1100 bed-knife grinder. The staff consists of the Superintendent of Golf Course Operations, Assistant Superintendent, Golf Course Technician, three full- time Golf Course Maintainers, and approximately 10 temporary/seasonal staff, while in season.

Stanley is seeking a self-motivated, self-driven, responsible, positive team player who takes pride in their work and has attention to detail. The candidate will not only be the main applicator of fertilizers and pesticides (will have assistance from the assistant superintendent, at times, to expedite applications due to busy golf play) but also be responsible of reel grinding, back-lapping and rebuilding of mowing units for the golf course as well as two 5-gang mowers at Willow Brook Park. Educational Requirements

Graduation from High school or technical/vocational school plus one year experience back-lapping , grinding and rebuilding of reel units. Prior experience operating hand and ground driven sprayers and fertilizer spreading equipment. Current or past golf course maintenance work experience as well as knowledge of the game of golf. Irrigation trouble shooting and repair. Must have proof of a State of CT D.E.E.P Applicator License at time of application submittal and be willing to obtain the State of CT D.E.E.P Golf Course Supervisory (3B) or Turf and Ornamental (3A) License within one (1) year of hire date.

Experience Requirements

A working knowledge of the standard practices, processes and equipment/tools utilized in back-lapping and reel grinding. Able to properly rebuild mowing units when needed as well as set proper mowing heights on a variety of mowing equipment. A working knowledge of golf course mowing and trimming equipment ie. rotary and reel type units. A working knowledge of building and facility maintenance trades. A working knowledge of all types of adjuvants, fertilizers, pesticides and the operation of hand and ground driven sprayers and fertilizer spreading equipment. Able to scout and identify insect and disease issues when life cycles and weather conditions are favorable for them. Knowledge of what types of pesticides are needed to prevent and/or control them. Knowledge and understanding of proper irrigation troubleshooting and repair. Identifying and watering by hand or overhead sprinklers of localized dry spots on playing surfaces. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagramed form. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and convert all units of measure. Ability to provide lead supervision to assigned staff members. Ability to work cooperatively and have a good working relationship with other City of New Britain department personnel, golf professional, assistant golf professional, restaurant manager(s)/ staff, private contractors and the golfing public.

Job Benefits

After five (5) years of employment, you are vested into the state pension system, MERS (Municipal Employment Retirement System). The city observes fourteen (14) holidays, and one (1) floating holiday. You will receive four (4), up to six (6) personal days, annually, five (5) vacation days issued after your first six (6) months of employment, with the addition of five (5) more days after one (1) year. Vacation time will go up as years worked increase. You will accumulate one (1) sick day per month, maxing out at one hundred fifty (150) days. Overtime is time and a half after eight (8) hours worked as well as on Saturdays. Sundays and holidays worked are double-time plus the paid holiday.
