Grounds Staff

Concord Academy (CA), an independent college preparatory school for grades 9 through 12 located in Concord, Massachusetts, has an opening in our Facilities & Operations Department for a Grounds Maintenance Technician to start immediately. Position Summary

The Grounds Maintenance Technician supports the daily care and long-term stewardship of CA’s 39-acre main campus and the Moriarty Athletic Campus. The ideal candidate has experience in grounds or athletic turf maintenance, with skills in irrigation repair, safe operation of grounds equipment, and a working knowledge of turf and landscape care. This is a hands-on, team-oriented position contributing to a safe, sustainable, and welcoming campus environment.  Monday–Friday schedule, year-round, with early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed for weather or events. This position will report to the Grounds Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

Grounds & Landscape Care

  • Mow, trim, edge, mulch, weed, prune, and manage leaf and brush removal.
  • Maintain planting beds and assist with seasonal plantings.
  • Support CA’s sustainability goals through organic/low-impact treatments, reduced irrigation, and the use of battery-powered equipment where feasible.

Athletic Turf & Fields

  • Perform aeration, dethatching, topdressing, overseeding, soil testing, and fertility amendments.
  • Prepare and line athletic fields; maintain clay infields and tennis courts.
  • Operate and maintain walk-behind and riding/reel mowers; assist with reel sharpening and adjustments.

Irrigation

  • Troubleshoot and repair irrigation systems, including heads, valves, and mainline leaks.
  • Conduct seasonal startup and winterization; adjust coverage and programming for efficiency.

Equipment & Safety

  • Safely operate utility vehicles, tractors, compact tractors, skid-steers, aerators, and snow/ice equipment.
  • Perform daily/weekly equipment checks; report maintenance needs promptly.
  • Follow all CA safety protocols and use proper PPE. Maintain an organized shop and yard.

Winter Operations

  • Participate in snow and ice response, including plowing, sanding/salting, and walkway clearing.
  • Provide on-call or rotational support during storms and weather events.

Collaboration & Service

  • Work effectively within a diverse, inclusive, and team-oriented environment grounded in Common Trust.
  • Interact courteously with students, faculty, staff, and visitors; assist with event setup and support.
  • Use CA’s work order system to track tasks and closeouts (training provided).

Qualifications:

Required

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in grounds, landscape, parks, golf course, or athletic turf maintenance.
  • Demonstrated irrigation troubleshooting and repair skills.
  • Proficiency with grounds equipment and safe operation practices.
  • Working knowledge of turf care fundamentals.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to lift/move 50+ lbs., work outdoors in all seasons, and stand or walk for extended periods.

Preferred

  • Experience with athletic field striping and game-day preparation.
  • Basic horticultural knowledge and pruning techniques.
  • Skid-steer or compact tractor experience.
  • Massachusetts Hoisting License 2B preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Forklift certification a plus.
  • Familiarity with organic or low-impact landscape practices.
  • Massachusetts pesticide applicator or core license (not required).
  • OSHA-10 and/or CPR/First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain.
  • Comfort using a CMMS or work-order application (training provided).
