Assistant Superintendent

The Green Department at The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale seeks a passionate, career-driven, self-motivated, detail-oriented turf professional who takes pride in preparing a championship-caliber golf course experience for its members and guests.  Whether it may be project-related, an agronomic process, or preparing for a Member-Guest tournament, the Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Director of Agronomy, Superintendent, and other management team members to develop short and long-term goals and plans to be completed within the operation.  Primary responsibilities will include scheduling, training, and leading a Turf Team of 9 (off-season) and 30 (in-season), course set-up, precise application of plant protectants and fertilizers, accurate inventory of products, assistance with EOP ordering, thorough record keeping, and moisture management.  Problem-solving and providing solutions to challenges that the Team faces will also be a responsibility. 

Educational Requirements

Pursuing a Turfgrass Management degree or certificate.  Has a strong desire to become a Golf Course Superintendent.

Experience Requirements

2-4 years of progressive experience in the turfgrass maintenance industry. 

Special Requirements

Self-motivated, positive attitude, willing to exceed member expectations, work every other weekend from April to November, and 2 of 3 holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) during the golf season.  The average work week will range from 45-65 hours in season.  During the off-season (December - March), hours will range from 32-40 hours/ week with 1 “comp day” provided per week based on the number of weeks worked over 50 hours during the golf season.  Obtain and maintain a PA Applicator's License within 90 days of hire and undergo a criminal background check.

An opportunity to gain valuable experience working on both warm and cool-season turf varieties.  In 2024, we opened a brand-new 9-hole, reversible Par 3 course called The Landing.  The 20-acre course has Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass tees and fairways with bentgrass putting greens built on a variable depth rootzone.  In 2025, we opened a state-of-the-art Golf Academy to expose aspiring golfers who want to pursue the great game of golf, as well as allowing experienced players to refine their game.  We are currently under construction of Phase 2 of a state-of-the-art maintenance campus.  We will be working this off-season to open the facility in time for the 2026 season.  The Club recently hired Andrew Green Design to develop a long-range master plan for the historic Donald Ross 18-hole golf course.  A complete restoration of the course is expected in 2029.
