Assistant Superintendent
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent supports the Golf Course Superintendent in the daily maintenance, agronomic planning, and care of the golf course and surrounding grounds. This role plays a hands-on leadership position, helping ensure the course is consistently presented in excellent playing condition, is safe for golfers and staff, and reflects the club’s quality standards. The Assistant Superintendent is expected to be actively involved in daily operations while developing the skills necessary for long-term career advancement.
Course Maintenance & Agronomy

Assist in planning, implementing, and overseeing turfgrass maintenance programs including mowing, irrigation, fertilization, cultivation, and pest management.

Monitor daily course conditions and report issues or recommendations to the Golf Course Superintendent.

Participate directly in the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, practice facilities, and landscaped areas.

Help execute seasonal agronomic plans based on weather conditions, play levels, and superintendent direction.
Staff Supervision & Leadership

Assist in supervising, training, and leading the grounds maintenance team.

Help assign daily tasks and ensure work is completed efficiently and to standard.

Lead by example with a strong work ethic and professional demeanor.

Ensure crew members follow all safety protocols, equipment procedures, and operational standards.
Equipment & Facility Support

Assist with the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of all turf equipment and machinery.

Support organization and cleanliness of the maintenance facility, including equipment storage, parts, and chemical areas.

Identify equipment issues and communicate repair or replacement needs to the Golf Course Superintendent.
Irrigation & Water Management

Assist with operation, scheduling, troubleshooting, and repair of the irrigation system.

Monitor soil moisture levels and assist in implementing efficient water-use strategies.

Respond promptly to irrigation-related issues to minimize turf stress.
Recordkeeping & Administration

Assist with recordkeeping related to chemical applications, equipment usage, and daily maintenance logs.

Help track labor and material usage to support budget management.

Maintain accurate and organized agronomic and compliance records.
Environmental & Regulatory Compliance

Follow and help enforce safe handling, storage, and application of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.

Maintain required licenses and certifications or work toward obtaining them.

Support environmentally responsible practices to protect water resources and surrounding ecosystems.
Communication & Collaboration

Communicate daily course conditions, staff needs, and project progress to the Golf Course Superintendent.

Work collaboratively with golf operations and other departments to support course-quality expectations.

Assist with special projects, course improvements, and renovations as assigned.
Educational Requirements

Degree or certification in turf management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field (preferred).

Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) membership or certification (preferred).

Working knowledge of turfgrass management practices, irrigation systems, and golf course equipment.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to lead and motivate team members.

Ability to work long and variable hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required by course conditions.
