Assistant Superintendent

Old Marsh Golf Club, established in 1987, is renowned as a "purist club" for those with a genuine passion for golf. It is dedicated to preserving the essence of the sport and the natural landscape it occupies. Designed by Pete Dye, the course incorporates the unique wetlands of South Florida and supports diverse wildlife populations.

Under the direction of the Superintendent, the 1st Assistant Superintendent is responsible for:

 
  1. Course Maintenance:

    • Participating in and overseeing the maintenance of greens, fairways, tees, roughs, and other areas of the golf course.
    • Supervising irrigation systems, ensuring proper watering schedules, and making adjustments as necessary.
    • Implementing turf management practices such as mowing, fertilization, aeration, and topdressing to maintain course quality.
  2. Pest and Disease Management:

    • Identifying and managing pests, weeds, and diseases that may affect the health of the turf.
    • Implementing integrated pest management strategies to minimize the use of chemicals and maintain environmental sustainability.
  3. Equipment Maintenance:

    • Overseeing the maintenance and repair of golf course maintenance equipment, including mowers, aerators, sprayers, and utility vehicles.
    • Ensuring all equipment is properly serviced and in good working condition.
  4. Staff Management:

    • Assisting in the recruitment, training, and supervision of groundskeeping staff.
    • Scheduling work assignments and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
  5. Project Management:

    • Assisting with the planning and execution of special projects, such as course renovations, construction projects, or landscaping enhancements.
    • Coordinating with contractors and other stakeholders to ensure projects are completed on time and within specifications.
  6. Environmental Stewardship:

    • Implementing environmental best practices to preserve natural habitats, conserve water, and minimize chemical usage.
    • Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and permits.
  7. Customer Service:

    • Interacting with members and responding to inquiries or concerns about course conditions in a professional and courteous manner.
    • Collaborating with other staff to ensure a positive golf experience.
  8. Record-Keeping and Reporting:

    • Maintaining accurate records of maintenance schedules.
    • Providing regular reports to the superintendent regarding course conditions, maintenance practices, and chemical applications.
  9. Safety Compliance:

    • Enforcing safety protocols and ensuring a safe working environment for all groundskeeping staff.
    • Conducting regular safety training sessions and inspections.

Educational Requirements

Minimum Turf Certificate or Associate's Degree

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a second assistant or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to learn Irrigation System software.
  • Must obtain State of Florida Commercial Applicator license in Ornamental and Turf within 6 months.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with a good driving record.

Special Requirements

  • Knowledge of Agronomy and Golf: Requires understanding of agronomy principles and practices related to golf course maintenance, as well as knowledge of the game of golf.

  • Supervisory Skills: Must be able to effectively balance and supervise work activities, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently.

  • Customer Relations Skills: Good customer relations skills are necessary to interact with members and address their needs and concerns professionally.

  • Previous Club Experience: Previous experience working in a club environment is required, indicating familiarity with the specific demands and standards of a golf course.

  • Ability to Follow Instructions: Must be able to understand and carry out both verbal and written instructions effectively.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact professionally and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, coworkers, and club members is essential for successful collaboration and teamwork.
