Assistant Superintendent

Chartwell Golf & Country Club is looking for an experienced professional to join as a Lead Assistant Superintendent in the Greens Department. This role is critical to agronomic success and considered one of our three key leadership positions within the greens department.

In addition to maintaining pristine daily golf course conditions, the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will participate in projects including drainage, in-house construction of remaining elements of Andrew Greens’ golf course master plan, and a multi-million-dollar, state-of-the-art irrigation system upgrade planned for 2027.

This is a role designed for someone who wants to grow into broader leadership responsibilities. Chartwell continuously invests in the development of their team members, and the experience acquired in this role will position the candidate strongly to step into their first Head Golf Course Superintendent role.

  • 65-year-old original bent-poa push-up greens

  • Zeon Zoysia fairways
  • Toro OSMAC irrigation system
  • Majority John Deere equipment fleet (purchased)
  • Total rounds: 28,000
  • Operating budget: $1.9M
  • Capital budget: $150,000 annually
  • Future Club Initiatives: Full irrigation system redesign/renovation, Tennis court renovation, Pickleball expansion, Clubhouse renovation

Initial Priorities of Position:

  • Obtain Maryland state fertilizer and pesticide applicator certifications
  • Integrate seamlessly into a deeply established team culture, including 10 full-time year-round staff members with more than 120 combined years of service.
  • Support daily course conditioning standards across greens, fairways, and infrastructure.
  • Build credibility and trust with hourly staff and members.
  • Prepare to contribute meaningfully to upcoming capital initiatives, including irrigation redesign and facility upgrades.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in daily agronomic planning and execution.
  • Supervise and mentor maintenance staff (12 full-time, 4 part-time).
  • Support budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Lead committee meetings in the superintendent’s absence (6-member Green Committee; monthly meetings)
  • Maintain strong vendor and industry relationships.
  • Uphold professional and tactful member communication standards.
  • Foster a leadership culture that allows for experimentation, evaluation, and candid dialogue
  • Participate in winter weather management (rotational on call).

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $80,000 – $92,000

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of progressive golf course maintenance experience
  • Certificate, Associate, or bachelor’s degree in turfgrass or related field
  • Equivalent experience may offset educational requirements
  • Knowledge of turf equipment, cultivation practices, and chemical applications
  • Strong leader with a team-oriented philosophy
