Nestled at the entrance to the Sawtooth National Forest in historic Sun Valley, The Valley Club is a premier 205-acre private facility set against the stunning backdrop of central Idaho’s mountain landscape. The Club features a 27-hole championship layout designed by renowned architects Tom Fazio, Davis Love III, and Beau Welling, blending world-class playability with the natural beauty of the valley floor.

In 2020, the Club completed a $7.5 million renovation of the original 18 holes, including installation of a Rain Bird IC irrigation system, bunker reconstruction, and redesigned tees and green complexes to enhance playability, aesthetics, and water conservation. In 2022, an additional $3 million renovation further enhanced bunkers, forward tee complexes, and cart paths on the Fazio Nine.

Position Summary

The Assistant Superintendent plays a key leadership role in the daily management and long-term success of the golf course maintenance operation. This position works directly with the Golf Course Superintendent to deliver exceptional course conditions, supervise staff, manage agronomic programs, and uphold the high standards expected at The Valley Club.

The ideal candidate is an experienced turf professional who leads by example, communicates effectively, and is committed to excellence in conditioning, presentation, and team culture.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Development

  • Supervise and lead maintenance staff in daily operations
  • Assist in scheduling, training, and performance management
  • Foster a positive, professional, and team-oriented work environment
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with staff, management, and other club departments

Golf Course Operations

  • Oversee and participate in all mowing and course setup operations including greens, tees, fairways, approaches, and roughs
  • Execute daily course preparation, including precise pin and tee placements
  • Maintain championship-level playing conditions with strong attention to detail

Agronomic Programs

  • Assist in planning and implementing fertility, plant protectant, and cultural programs
  • Apply and supervise fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and plant growth regulators
  • Perform calibration and calculations for accurate chemical and fertilizer applications
  • Identify and manage turfgrass diseases, pests, and abiotic stress conditions
  • Oversee aeration, verti-cutting, topdressing, and other cultural practices

Irrigation and Water Management

  • Assist with irrigation scheduling and water management strategies
  • Support irrigation system installation, troubleshooting, drainage, and repairs
  • Perform and supervise effective hand watering to maintain optimal turf health

Equipment and Compliance

  • Operate equipment safely and maintain clean work environments
  • Coordinate with the Equipment Manager regarding maintenance and repairs
  • Maintain chemical storage, inventory, and regulatory compliance standards

Educational Requirements

  • Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management or related field

Experience Requirements

  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience
  • Idaho pesticide applicator’s license, or ability to obtain within required timeframe
