Assistant Superintendent
The Assistant Superintendent at Black Bear Golf Club plays a critical leadership role in the daily operation of the Golf Course Maintenance Department. This position supports the Superintendent in delivering exceptional course conditions while fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
This role is designed as a developmental pathway to Golf Course Superintendent and provides hands-on experience in agronomic planning, team leadership, operational execution, and strategic course management.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Promote and uphold company standards, service philosophies, and safety policies.
- Develop weekly staff schedules and assign daily work priorities based on course conditions and operational needs.
- Lead daily team meetings to communicate objectives, reinforce expectations, and motivate staff.
- Train, mentor, and cross-train maintenance personnel to build depth and operational flexibility.
- Support hiring, onboarding, payroll coordination, and safety training initiatives.
- Maintain a professional presence and foster a positive team culture focused on accountability and performance.
Agronomic & Course Management
- Assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of agronomic programs.
- Identify, diagnose, and troubleshoot turfgrass and environmental issues.
- Calibrate and operate fertilizer and pesticide application equipment.
- Implement seasonal fertility and plant protection programs in compliance with regulations.
- Ensure daily course setup meets or exceeds established playing standards.
- Evaluate equipment condition, setup, and operational efficiency.
Administrative & Operational Support
- Assist the Superintendent with reporting, planning, and strategic scheduling.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, equipment usage protocols, and PPE requirements.
- Participate in audits, inspections, and performance service reviews (PSRs).
- Complete additional projects and assignments as directed by management.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Associate degree in Turfgrass Management or related field required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressive golf course maintenance experience.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience required.
- Must obtain and maintain a state pesticide applicator license within three (3) months of hire.
- Strong working knowledge of turfgrass equipment, irrigation systems, and agronomic practices.
- High-performing candidates demonstrating leadership excellence will receive special consideration.

Physical & Cognitive Demands
The majority of time is spent overseeing field activities, directing staff, and executing skill related tasks that the golf course needs (Irrigation related, fertility related, and cultural related)
Additional responsibilities include planning, reporting, and strategic coordination with the Superintendent, as well as ongoing professional development and team training.
