Westwood Country Club is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Assistant Superintendent to join a high-performing team at one of the premier and fastest-evolving private clubs in the Mid-Atlantic region. This position is designed for a driven professional who aspires to become a Golf Course Superintendent and is seeking meaningful leadership experience, project ownership, and exposure to high-level decision-making.
Founded in 1954, Westwood Country Club offers a full complement of premier amenities and is recognized as one of the most up-and-coming clubs in Northern Virginia. In addition to golf, Westwood is home to one of the nation’s premier court tennis facilities, having hosted U.S. Opens and World Championships, further highlighting the club’s commitment to excellence across all areas of the property.
Westwood has a proven and consistent track record of developing Assistants into Superintendent positions. This role is part of a structured succession philosophy that prioritizes mentorship, leadership development, and real responsibility to prepare candidates for the next step in their careers.
The Club is currently undertaking a multi-year, $16+ million capital improvement program across the property, including golf course renovations, infrastructure upgrades, and major enhancements to member amenities. Current and recent projects include a new Rain Bird IC irrigation system, drainage improvements, fairway expansions and contouring, and significant practice facility upgrades including a TrackMan range installation. Additional clubhouse, pool, and campus-wide improvements reinforce Westwood’s commitment to continuous investment and long-term excellence.
Position Overview
The Assistant Superintendent will work directly with the Director of Grounds and leadership team to oversee daily operations, staff development, and long-term course improvement initiatives. This role provides hands-on leadership experience combined with exposure to budgeting, planning, and capital project execution within a progressive, forward-thinking operation.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist in planning and executing daily golf course maintenance operations
- Lead, train, and develop a team of full-time and seasonal staff
- Monitor turf conditions and contribute to agronomic decision-making including water management, fertility, and pest control
- Operate, troubleshoot, and optimize irrigation systems
- Assist with chemical and fertilizer applications, calibration, and recordkeeping
- Support tournament preparation and championship-level course setup
- Participate in capital improvement projects including planning and execution
- Contribute to budgeting, inventory management, and operational efficiency initiatives
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork

Educational Requirements
Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field preferred.
Experience Requirements
- 1–3 years of experience in golf course maintenance (Assistant, AIT, or Intern level)
- Experience with irrigation systems, chemical applications, and daily course operations preferred
- Ability to lead and communicate effectively within a team environment
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Special Requirements
- Virginia pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain within 90 days
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required
- Positive attitude with a strong work ethic and desire to advance in the profession
