Assistant Superintendent

Conway Farms Golf Club is seeking a driven, detail-oriented Senior Assistant Superintendent to join a high-performing agronomy team at one of the premier private clubs in the Midwest. This is a key leadership role designed for a motivated professional who is committed to advancement and preparing for a future Golf Course Superintendent position.

Working closely with Superintendent Connor Healy, the Senior Assistant will take an active leadership role in daily maintenance operations, staff management, and long-term agronomic planning. This individual will directly influence course conditions, operational efficiency, and the overall golf experience for the membership.

The club cultivates a strong culture of professional growth and has a proven track record of developing team members into Superintendent roles—placing multiple assistants into top positions within the past year. This position offers exceptional exposure, mentorship, and hands-on experience with championship-level conditioning and modern agronomic practices.

 

Club Highlights: 

  • Total Annual Rounds: 21,000 
  • Total Staff: 11 Full-Time | 12–15 Part-Time 
  • Typical Work Schedule: 
    • In-season (April–November): 4:30 AM – 1:30 PM (plus additional hours as needed) 
    • Off-season: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM (40-hour weeks) 
  • Turf Types: 

    • Greens: 007 Bentgrass 
    • Tees: Penncross Bentgrass 
    • Fairways: Penncross / Penntrio Bentgrass 
    • Rough: Bluegrass 
    • Native areas: Prairie grasses and fine fescue 
  • Future Projects: 

    • Clubhouse renovation (Fall start) 
    • 3rd tee complex rebuild 
    • Cart path rerouting 
    • Ongoing course improvements with Jackson Kahn Design 
  • Irrigation System: Rain Bird 2-wire with Cirrus Pro, Watertronics pump station 
  • Equipment: Toro mowers and sprayers, Club Car, Workman, Cushman fleet

INITIAL PRIORITIES OF POSITION: 

  • Listen, observe, and learn the operation thoroughly

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND APTITUDE: 

  • Lead and manage daily golf course maintenance operations 
  • Supervise, train, and develop staff (crew of 10–25) 
  • Execute and oversee: 
    • Course setup (cups, tees, mowing, watering) 
    • Chemical applications and plant protectants 
    • Irrigation operation, troubleshooting, and repairs 
  • Scout and evaluate turf conditions (disease, moisture, pests) 
  • Delegate and prioritize tasks based on course needs 
  • Assist with budgeting, inventory, payroll, and hiring 
  • Maintain strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Step into Superintendent role when necessary 
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and capital projects 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • 4+ years of golf course maintenance experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (Turfgrass or related field), or equivalent experience
  • Illinois pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
  • Strong leadership and team development experience
  • Commitment to continued education and professional growth 

 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: 

  • Salary - $90,000 
  • Annual bonus potential 
  • 401(k) per club policy: 
    • 100% match on first 3% 
    • 50% match on next 2% (total 4% match at 5% contribution)
