Superintendent/General Manager

The position of Golf Course Superintendent for the New Indian River Club (hereinafter “Club”) requires an individual who is capable of exercising excellent independent judgment and applying common sense to daily operations of the Club’s golf course operations.  The employee must establish and maintain a personal disposition that is tactful and personable which facilitates an excellent relationship with Club Members, Guests, Club management and employees, the Board of Directors, vendors, suppliers, and the public. The mission and goal of the employee is to advance Customer Satisfaction by maintaining the golf course in exceptional condition.  This is a management-level position.

 

The employee is responsible for the safe, effective, and efficient management of Club’s golf course maintenance operations.  The employee is responsible for directing an agronomical, sophisticated turf grass management program designed to provide a playing surface that meets the club’s aesthetic and playing standards while preserving the integrity of the environment.

 

The employee shall be responsible for resolving operational issues and problems that occur on a day-to-day basis involving the golf course.   The employee will be required to be innovative and proactive.  

 

The employee is responsible for effective time management which includes delegation of responsibilities and duties from time-to-time.  The employee must prioritize responsibilities to ensure the highest priorities are addressed and that golf course operations are managed effectively. 

 

The employee will work under the immediate supervision of the Club General Manager or a member of the Board of Directors. 

 

In furtherance of this manager’s mission and goals, the Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for:

 

Communication, Staff Management, and Staff Professional Development:

 

·         Recommending to the General Manager the hiring, promoting, disciplining, and/or terminating of employees in accordance with Club policies and procedures.  The employee is responsible for recommending to the General Manager pay rates for employee position classifications.

 

·         Motivating and supervising full-time and part-time employees including Assistant Superintendent, Spray Tech, Equipment Manager, Irrigation Tech, and Equipment Operator.

 

·         Establishing a positive work environment, effective communication strategy, and an effective team approach with his/her staff that supports the accomplishment of the goals and mission of the Club.

 

·         Encouraging employees to suggest ideas for operational and administrative improvements. 

 

·         Developing training, orientation, and mentoring programs for new employees under his/her supervision including, but not limited to, basic equipment operation instruction. 

 

·         Communicating with the Head Golf Professional to ensure proper support for events, tournaments, and general golf operations, including course closings. The employee shall strive to develop a team approach with other departments to deliver the “Ultimate Golf Experience” and outstanding customer satisfaction to Members and Guests.

 

 

Hazardous Materials Management

·         Ensuring the proper storage of hazardous materials such as pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and other materials which require special handling.

·         Creating and maintaining accurate and auditable records of hazardous materials materials storage and use in conformance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements (for example, Materials Safety Data Sheets, pesticide applications, etc.)

·         Ensuring employees who are tasked with application of hazardous materials are familiar with their proper use, storage, and medical treatment if improperly exposed.

 

Maintenance Management

·         Planning and implementing fertilization and pesticide application programs.

 

·         Recording maintenance performed on the golf.

 

·         Developing recommends to the Board for short and long term construction programs and the subsequent implementation and management.

 

 

·         Managing the Club’s equipment fleet to ensure that routine preventative maintenance is done in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations or Maintenance Procedures, where applicable.

 

·         Ensuring that maintenance records are maintained on equipment and tracking repair work to include parts and labor costs for each piece of equipment.

 

·           Develops and maintains irrigation system for golf course.

 

·         Conducting, at a minimum, annual[1] performance evaluations for each person he/she directly supervises in accordance with the Club’s employee evaluation procedures.  This will include recommendations to the Board for annual pay increases based upon documented employee performance. 

 

·         Resolving employee/staff issues before escalating the matter to the General Manager or Board.

 

·         Reporting to the Board on pre-established operational metrics, performance, and general operations under the employee’s direct control.

 

·         Reviewing the Employee Handbook and job descriptions at least annually to ensure the documentation is relevant and makes recommendations for edits to the Board.

Communication with Members, Visitors, Guests, and Perspective Members:

·         Communicating effectively with Club members that are genuine in all aspects of communication – verbal and non-verbal, sending and receiving, and accepting feedback with a professional demeanor. 

 

·         Facilitating communication with Club members through the Board that solicit ideas for improving the overall golf course experience at the Club.

 

Organization and Financial Management:

·         Preparing for and being organized for meetings with management, the Board, and staff.

 

·         Developing and monitoring annual operating and capital budgets as well as the long-range capital equipment and improvement budgets (five year) for the Grounds Department. The employee shall ensure the financial integrity of operations and appropriate use equipment and supplies by staff under his/her supervision. 

 

·         Accounting of staff work hours to ensure accurate and timely payroll administration.

 

·         Reporting on the financial performance of areas under his/her responsibility.

 

·         Monitoring compliance with purchasing policies and procedures which are affected by Golf Course Maintenance Staff.  Review the selection of goods to ensure quality that meets operational needs.

 

  Professionalism, Ethics, Licensing, and Professional Certifications:

·         Maintaining a high degree of personal and professional integrity in accordance with the provisions of the Employee Handbook.

 

·         Achieving and maintaining certification as a GCSAA Class A Superintendent professional. 

 

·         Remaining current on developments in the agronomical aspects of golf course operations that include advances in products, services, and supplies. 

 

·         Maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor when on the job and representing the Club in outside events.  Professional appearance includes maintaining proper hygiene and appropriate dress for the occasion.  Professional demeanor includes maintaining a caliber of professional communication in keeping with the principles of the Club and its membership.
