Assistant Equipment Technician

Under the supervision of the Equipment Manager and Director, the Assistant Mechanic assists in a comprehensive preventive maintenance program.  The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the repair of failing equipment, performing routine service and lubrication of equipment, properly communicating any needs or problems relating to the maintenance or repair of equipment to the Equipment Manager.  The Assistant Mechanic places safety as a top priority and is responsible for maintaining a clean and organized service area, checking out/in handheld tools and equipment, and will be familiar with all aspects of equipment operation and maintenance.    

The Assistant Mechanic will:

  • Inspect, and repair mechanical defects/failures in various grounds maintenance equipment including diesel, electric, and gasoline powered utility vehicles, mowers, trucks, trenchers, tractors, oil changes, tire repairs and all other mechanical equipment used by staff performing the maintenance work.
  • Assists in the instruction and training of the maintenance workers regarding preventive maintenance, and the proper cleaning of and safe operation of equipment.
  • Assists the Equipment Manager in the continuation of a preventive maintenance program within budget on all equipment.
  • After instruction and with supervision, backlaps and sets HOC on all reel mowing equipment as instructed.
  • Sharpens, balances, and replaces rotary mower blades.
  • Checks out/checks in 2-cycle equipment and helps maintain inventory control.
  • Helps complete shop area maintenance.
  • Performs basic golf course/landscape maintenance practices when needed.
  • Washes and returns all equipment to the designated location at the maintenance facility; and cleans the maintenance areas.
  • Performs other duties as directed by Equipment Manager.

Educational Requirements

  • Certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination and experience

Experience Requirements

  • Prior golf course operation experience (two or more years preferred).
  • Must have a thorough understanding of daily maintenance and course preparation.
  • Must have working knowledge of all normally used golf course equipment and tools, be able to operate such, and possess the ability and willingness to train others in the safe and efficient operation thereof.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the game of golf.
