Equipment/Shop Manager

Position Summary:

The Equipment Manager reports to the Head Superintendent and will work with Assistant Superintendent for 36 holes – Diamond Ridge and The Woodlands. The Equipment Manager will supervise a mechanic shop with an Assistant Mechanic and work with the maintenance staff on day-to-day operation of course equipment.  The Equipment Manager will perform/oversee all mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance of equipment and safety inspections for all operating mechanical equipment for the Turfgrass Department. Safety of equipment and staff is one of the highest priorities. The Equipment Manager will keep the Head Superintendent aware of pending issues and concerns. This includes status of equipment repairs when needed for current projects, vital repairs for large equipment and small equipment replacements needed. Some repairs will have to be completed in the field.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Repairs and maintains the golf course equipment fleet which includes gas, diesel and electric powered equipment and keeps the equipment in proper working condition regarding safety and function.
  • Instructs golf course maintenance workers regarding preventive maintenance responsibilities, proper handling, operation, and cleaning of the equipment.
  • Properly prioritizes equipment repair and maintenance work.
  • Responsible for ordering parts and maintaining detailed parts inventory to aid in meeting budget goals.
  • Schedules all preventative maintenance and keeps exceptional records of preventative maintenance programs.
  • Responsible for administration and development of equipment repair budget.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work area.  Follows environmentally sound procedures for waste disposal within established guidelines of OSHA, MOSH and MDE.

Educational Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education:      High School Diploma or equivalent                  

 Experience:     Minimum 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.                        

Specific Skills/Abilities:

  • Diagnosing mechanical breakdown, repairing general turfgrass maintenance equipment and small tools.
  • Effective and approachable leader who takes initiative in all situations with the purpose of finding the best solutions for any issue at hand related to the maintenance of equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills while collaborating with the Superintendent, department staff, and employees when necessary and follows up with ongoing issues or projects.
  • Attentive to details, and organizational skills to ensure proper documentation is available when needed.
  • Proficient organizational skills to ensure equipment is maintained and in good operating order and ready for use when needed.
  • Welding and fabrication skills are preferred.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects.
  • Prioritizes continued education for self and staff for continued development.
  • Teamwork mentality is essential.
  • Skilled in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools, skills to make various types of mechanical repairs, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, balancing, reaching, and heavy lifting.
  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred.

Specialized Knowledge / Licenses / Knowledge of Quality Control checks that are needed on Reels/Bedknives and grinding height checks.

Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and basic automotive maintenance and repair. 

Valid Driver’s License.

Work Environment: Golf Course, sheltered workshop areas, other outdoor areas.
