Assistant-in-Training

Full-time

Under the general supervision of the Golf Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent functions as Assistant in Training to prepare for career advancement within the golf course industry. Examines, monitors, and repairs golf course irrigation and pumping systems. Provides crew leader support including employee training and supervision.  Performs all routine golf course maintenance duties as well as troubleshoots, details, and critically reviews golf course presentation (9-18 holes/day). Provides support to all aspects of golf course maintenance operations including but not limited to: grounds maintenance, facility construction, landscape construction, janitorial support, equipment operation, and special event support. Serves as lead worker for part-time and seasonal staff. Requires some evenings and will work weekend shifts as scheduled. Works closely with Superintendent and Assistant in daily scheduling and training of assigned crew.

Responsible for the servicing and repairing of the golf course irrigation system and pump station. 

Assists with all maintenance functions of the golf course including landscape and turf maintenance at the recreations campus complex.

Studies golf course presentation on a daily basis to ensure that bunkers are raked, tee markers are set, cups are properly cut, etc.

Responsible for repair and maintenance of restrooms, shelters, fences, and concrete work. 

Responsible for the upkeep of golf course buildings and pump houses excluding clubhouse and associated structures.

Mows, edges, aerates, and fertilize greens and fairways. Applies fertilizers as necessary. Documents products applied and rates of application.

Operates maintenance equipment to maintain golf course landscaping. Equipment includes mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, aerifiers, and various hand tools and implements. Assists with minor repairs and adjustments to turf grass equipment.

Plants and maintains trees, shrubs, perennial beds, flower beds, and native plants.

Landscape Construction - soil preparation, fine grading, sod/seed installation, shrubs, perennial and flower bed installation.

Responsible for trash collection and removal on course, cart paths, drainage systems, and open space.

Provides training to unskilled and semi skilled employees in methods of chemical applications, irrigation system operations, and maintenance equipment.

Ensures a safe work environment for staff including appropriate PPE and training.

Serves as weekend shift supervisor of seasonal crew on scheduled weekends. On-call lead on scheduled weekends.

Other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements

2 or 4 year certificate or degree in Turfgrass Management or related field such as parks, landscape architecture, horticulture, etc. preferred. 

Experience Requirements

 Minimum two years golf course maintenance, irrigation, or related parks maintenance/landscaping experience.  Mechanical experience with turf equipment preferred. Prior supervisory experience a plus.
