By Somerset Hills Country Club, - Bernardsville, New Jersey
Somerset Hills Country Club was established in 1899 and is located in Bernardsville, NJ. In the most recent golf.com rankings, Somerset Hills has moved up to #23 in the United States and #42 in the world. Due to being one of his earliest creations, A.W. Tillinghast was doing a lot of tinkering and fine tuning of his craft, which left us with a very unique piece of property with a lot of variation from hole to hole. In collaboration with Renaissance Golf Design a consistent effort has been maintained to showcase and restore the original design and how Tillinghast first envisioned the course to be played. The golf course's best defenses against par are the playing conditions and unique green complexes. Although not long in yardage, strategic planning is required for every shot. From an agronomic and playability standpoint, there is only one goal. That goal is to maintain the golf course as firm as possible through the green. We are not concerned with off color grass as brown does not mean dead, and green doesn't always mean healthy. We are constantly scheming new agronomic plans to accomplish this goal and provide playing conditions that are not normal for Americanized golf. Water management and proper agronomics are of the utmost importance. We are currently in the midst of an in-house bunker restoration that will continue over the upcoming seasons. All work is being performed by the staff including shaping, drainage, installation of Capillary Concrete, and creation/installation of our custom bunker sand blend. Our current Senior Assistant is overseeing this project while training the rest of the team in preparation of his eventual departure for a Superintendent position. A complete renovation of the entire area presiding in front of the golf shop including the practice tee, and tee complexes for the first and tenth hole will begin in the Fall of 2021. All work will be done in-house by the staff in coordination with our architect. Although this posting is for an AIT, titles are only important for the resume. We have a great group of young turf professionals who all work as one team, sharing all the responsibilities. The goal is to put out a memorable product that highlights the team. The experience and resume of the individual is not prioritized as much as the personality and the overall fit among the team.
