About the Club:

Upper Montclair Country Club, founded in 1901, is a premier, member-owned, private, golf and social club located 9 miles West of New York City. Without other amenities such as racquet sports and aquatics, the Club can hyper-focus on providing exceptional golf, social, and dining experiences for its members and their guests. 

The Club has 27 holes of Championship golf. The course was originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast and in the 1950s, there was a major course renovation directed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. which transformed Upper Montclair Country Club into its present 27-hole design. The Club has a long history of hosting professional events and will be hosting the LPGA’s Cognizant Founders Cup this May of 2024.

Position Summary:

The Course Superintendent will be a leader and member of the team providing tournament golf conditions, managing course restorations, and providing exceptional golf experiences daily.  Working closely with the Director of Grounds the Superintendent will develop and implement weekly, monthly, and annual goals and objectives. This includes but is not limited to agronomical programs, budgeting, crew management, record keeping, irrigation, project work, fertilizer & pesticide applications, scouting, water management, attending committee meetings, and filling in for the Director of Grounds when necessary.

Essential Job Functions:

·      Effectively lead, develop, train, oversee, manage, coach, motivate, and assist the golf course Assistant Superintendents and crew.

·      Scheduling and directing personnel and equipment to accomplish the work to be done on the club’s 27-hole property and verifying work is completed. 

·      Inspecting the golf course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and the effect changes in management programs are having.          

·      Working closely with the Director of Grounds on developing, scheduling, implementing, and overseeing activities, goals, and plans relating to course conditions and member satisfaction. 

·      Overseeing, directing, and assisting the team in maintaining the condition of the course, including the turf, bunkers, irrigation fertilization, and pesticide applications.

·      Overseeing and ensuring inventories of supplies, such as fertilizers, pesticides, tools, and sand are monitored and replaced as needed.

·      Communicating with appropriate department heads (golf, catering, food & beverage, etc.) on course conditions, set-up, play, and other matters as needed for the planning and execution of club events or activities.

·      Insuring chemicals, petroleum, and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of under local, and state regulations.

·      Assisting in developing and managing the department’s annual budget, including payroll and actuals to budget.  

·      Attending committee, membership, and board meetings as may be requested and participating in management meetings as may be reasonably required. 

·      Providing for the adequate safety and protection of members, guests, and employees, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and legal requirements. 

·      Attends turf conferences and other educational programs to maintain current knowledge of technical and turf innovations and changes that could affect the department’s operations

·      Overseeing and assisting in winter maintenance of the property, such as snow removal.

·      Representing the Club, on and off the property, ethically and professionally that will always enhance the Club’s and employee image and reputation.

Experience, Skills, Abilities, Knowledge, and Education:

·      Experience leading, developing, training, overseeing, managing, coaching, motivating, and assisting a golf course team.

·      A BS or Associates Degree in turf grass management, or related certificate and experience.

·      Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

·      Understanding of pest control products and their applications.

·      Understanding of turf chemical and fertilizer products and their applications.

·      Knowledge of irrigation utilization, drainage installation, repair, and maintenance.

·      Experience with project oversight. 

·      Understanding of the game of golf and the impact of agronomic decisions on course playability.

·      Have a current state certification or license for pesticide applications, or the ability to acquire a license.
