Golf Course Superintendent

Job Summary:                         

Superintendent oversees the job functions responsible for multiple golf course operations.  Must train and
supervise staff, resolve human resource issues, and implement agronomic maintenance and development
programs.  The person in this position must be able to get along well with employees, customers, clients and
management and represent ABM in a positive light.  The employee will perform most duties in a combination
for outside work and a typical office environment.  The noise level in the office environment is usually quiet;
employee will experience noise/vibrations outside.  Job requires employee to perform duties at a company site;
working alone and closely with others, in excessive heat & humidity, occasional cold; with exposure to chemicals,
solvents, detergents, cleaners, fumes, smoke, gases; will walk on uneven surfaces and operate automatic and
manual transmission vehicles. 

Essential Functions:

  • Directs all facets of daily operation. 

 

  • Maintains the appearance and safety of the course by diagnosing and reporting agronomic issues; managing irrigation system adjustments and scheduling; maintain a wide variety of turf grasses in extreme climatic conditions; managing course preparations for tournaments and daily play; operating various hand and power tools as needed to accomplish mowing, edging and cultivation as needed; integrating environmental programs specializing in IPM (Integrated Pest Management); overseeing maintenance of golf maintenance equipment; assisting in the coordination, scheduling and supervision of capital improvement projects.
  • Directs maintenance operations in accordance with contract documents and specifications (employees involved in maintaining greens, fairways, tees, sand traps, bodies of water, rough, maintenance shop, golf carts and clubhouse) by recruiting, selecting, training, scheduling, evaluating, supervising and correcting when necessary; and directing safety meetings.
  • Performs administrative function by maintaining maintenance records and developing required maintenance reports; tracking maintenance expenses including payroll, supplies, fertilizer, chemicals, fuel logs, etc.; informing Branch Manager of parts, supplies and equipment needed.
  • Ensures a clean and orderly maintenance facility at all times.
  • Ordering of supplies and parts to ensure efficient and effective cost purchases in the best interest of the equipment and ABM.
  • Oversees the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering and the pest and weed control of the golf course.
  • Relevant licenses for regulatory agencies (a valid pesticide license in turf and ornamentals issued by the State in which they are employed and working).  
  •  Ability to operate all equipment used for golf course maintenance.
  • Good time management, organization and prioritization skills. Membership in the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association required.
  • Workers’ Compensation: call in accidents to WC provider; follow-up on treatment, return to work status; post-accident drug testing.
  • Requires the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; must be flexible and able to adapt to frequent changes in work priorities.
  • Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of ABM’s safety policies and rules.  Must be willing to report and/or act on safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such a level as determined by ABM.  Must be available and willing to work on a fulltime schedule and must be available and willing to work as needed and determined by ABM as necessary to meet the business needs.  This position requires working weekends & holidays, working irregular shifts (starting as early as 5:00 am), and attending evening meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by District Manager and/or Branch Manager.

 

Educational Requirements

Associate degree preferred in the Green Industry

Experience Requirements

2-3 years' experience as a Golf Course Superintendent required.

Special Requirements

GCAA Membership preferred.
