Assistant-in-Training

Royal Oaks Country Club, located in Houston, Texas is seeking an Assistant in Training to add to their golf course maintenance team.  The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in all golf course and grounds maintenance and management, including clubhouse grounds and horticultural plantings.

This position will report to the Golf Course Superintendent and will have interaction with vendors, members and guests.

Club highlights:

  • Maintenance staff: 24 full-time staff, including the Superintendent, Assistant, and Equipment Manager
  • Equipment: All leased equipment is Toro, with a mix of owned Toro equipment and John Deere tractors
  • Irrigation system: Toro SitePro
  • Future projects: Renovation of greens, irrigation, tee complexes, drainage, and re-grassing of high play areas, beginning in 2026 or 2027

Key Responsibilities, Skills, Aptitude, and Knowledge:

  • Participate in the development of all turf management programs and practices.
  • Participate in the development and execution of golf course budget and monitoring thereof.
  • Assist in supervision of routine maintenance functions, assist in scheduling, assignments, and equipment distribution, and be held accountable for the same.
  • Assist in the supervision of all improvement work and projects on golf course as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent
  • Assist in supervision of irrigation and drainage systems operation and maintenance.
  • Supervise and perform fertilization, spraying, and cultural activities on all turf areas as assigned by the superintendent.
  • Assist in the training of all crew members as required for proper work performance and safety.
  • Assist in the recording of documentation of weather, work, spray, fertilization, cultural, and other data as required in designated logbooks and forms.
  • Communicate with shop mechanics for all repairs and service.
  • Maintain communications with other supervisors as needed.
  • Subject to flexible schedule and hours and required to be on call for emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as requested by the Superintendent or General Manager.

Requirements: 

  •  2- or 4-year degree in turf grass management or a related field preferred, but not required
  • The ability to obtain and maintain certification license from the State of Texas for applying pesticides.
  • Golf course maintenance experience is preferred, but not required

Compensation and Benefits:

  • $20.00 - $25.00 per hour, dependent on experience

Educational Requirements
