Golf Course Superintendent

The golf course superintendent will manage and maintain the golf course properties including the golf course, clubhouse grounds and landscaping, open spaces, and the equipment used to maintain these areas. The superintendent is responsible for the development and implementation of all golf course maintenance programs, budgets, and personnel decisions. Utilizing a hands-on approach to leading, mentoring, and training individuals. Tierra Oaks Golf Club encourages a lead by doing atmosphere by all of our management teams.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (include but are not limited to): 

  • Maintains the golf course is in proper playing condition.

  • Inspects course regularly to evaluate and recommend improvements.

  • Plan any and all future improvements to the golf course, and oversee all construction, maintenance, and renovations.

  • Develops and maintains drainage, irrigation, and watering systems.

  • Oversees repairs of broken water lines or valves and may perform necessary repairs in an emergency.

  • Monitors utility programs to control water and electricity costs while providing specific reports to track water usage.

  • Supervises operation of the Equipment Repair Shop.

  • Ensures that chemicals, petroleum, and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations; maintains required records.

  • Conducts daily facility security checks ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and keys.

  • Ensures accurate recording of hourly labor clock in and clock out procedures.

  • Establishes and monitors compliance with all purchasing policies and procedures.

  • Schedules, trains, supervises, and evaluates all personnel assigned to the department.

  • Plans professional development and training activities for subordinates including safety training for equipment use and proper handling of fertilizers, herbicides, and all other chemicals used on the course.

  • Attends staff and management meetings.

  • Prepares annual budget for department; takes corrective action as necessary to help assure that budget goals are met.

  • Makes recommendations for capital improvement and purchases.

  • Ensures proper landscaping for property outside of the golf course including the clubhouse and surrounding areas.

  • Works closely and maintains a professional relationship with neighborhood HOA.

  • Coordinates applicable work with outside contractors.

  • Makes judgment calls when the course should be closed due to weather conditions that may damage the course if play continues.

  • Train and further the education of upcoming superintendents and staff members looking to better their careers.

  • Communicates as necessary with the Director of Golf and Operations Manager to discuss conditions of facilities, maintenance plans, scheduled events, and the number of rounds played.

  • Maintain a close relationship with other department heads.

  • Any other duties as may be assigned by executive management.

 

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Strong leadership, team-building, and interpersonal skills

  • Irrigation: The ability to troubleshoot, repair, program, and water. Rain Bird Software knowledge is preferred. 

  • Ability to operate general golf course maintenance equipment

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Experience calibrating, applying, and monitoring chemical and fertilizer applications

  • Strong organizational, planning, and prioritization skills

  • Self-motivated.

  • Experienced computer user including Microsoft Word and Excel. Proficient in other applications, i.e. email, internet.

  • Able to maintain and promote a positive professional image.

  • Detail oriented

  • Knowledge of the game of golf, rules of golf, and golf facility operations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Must be able to attain California QAL/QAC within 60-days of employment

  • Minimum of 3 years experience managing all phases of golf course management and turf culture

Educational Requirements

Bachelor's Degree is Preferred in Turf grass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture or a related field.
